Summary: Instructional Assistant will complete assignments assigned by the teacher, implement lesson plans as designed by the teacher. The Instructional Assistant is to carry out all duties and educational plans as assigned, manage student behaviors in the classes assigned, as well as give individualized educational assistance to selected students according to their unique learning needs.

Experience &

Education:

This position requires a high school diploma and teaching or experience as a teaching assistant with special education and/or “at risk” populations. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree is preferred. A repertoire of effective student motivational and discipline techniques, skills, etc. for middle and secondary students is necessary. This professional must demonstrate excellent human relations and communication skills, qualities, etc. to optimize his/her work with all Hope Tree Family Services' leadership, parents, school agencies, localities and youth agencies in a positive manner throughout the Commonwealth.

  • Develop a good professional relationship with all students to help them with school concerns, adjustment problems, and make effective and realistic goals.
  • Assists with all classroom duties, activities, etc. as well as the responsibility of implementing the lesson plan as prepared and directed by the teacher.
  • Gives teachers organizational support in organizing supplies in the classroom.
  • Supervises students on arrival and departure.
  • Help students clean up after activities.
  • Collects completed student class assignments.
  • Prepares and arranges classrooms for the teacher.
  • Gives teacher behavior management support such as observing and charting student behavior.
  • Provides positive reinforcement and support to teachers.
  • Supervises students and manages conflicts between students.
  • Provides close supervision for students with behavior problems.
  • Circulates in the classroom to provide support where needed.
  • Ensures class and school rules are followed.
  • Provides teachers or office managers with clerical support for operating copiers, fax and other office machines.
  • Sorts and files student papers, office documents, etc.
  • Corrects assigned student lessons and homework.
  • Communicates with social workers and childcare staff regarding students as directed.
  • Assists teachers on field trips as directed.
  • Attends trainings and workshops in order to enhance abilities and as required for certification.
  • Accepts consequences for actions. Prompt in meeting deadlines and following through on student educational and behavioral plans as directed by the teacher.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with supervisors and fellow educators to accomplish desired results by using tact, cooperation, teamwork, and communication skills; keeps appropriate people informed; compliant and supportive of established policies and procedures; understanding and supportive of Hope Tree’s mission.
  • Assist school professionals in administering/proctoring Standards of Learning (SOL) test and other standardized test if trained.
  • Follows all agency policies and procedures.
  • Reports to work as scheduled and meets with students and/or teachers as directed during the daily school schedule.
  • Serves as a one to one to students when needed.

  • Commitment to implement Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) strategies throughout the school day with students to ensure students have been given every opportunity to make good decisions.
