Position: 22792 - Eng Roadway Design

Design, manage, and produce right‑of‑way and construction roadway plans for a wide range of transportation projects using automated engineering and design software. Maintain strong skills in new design technology and construction methodology. Provide technical advice, guidance, and training regarding assigned engineering program areas. Prepare analyses, reports, and recommendations based on engineering determinations. Provide engineering support and consultation related to the engineering program area.

Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens, and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.

How You Will Contribute
  • Analyze and interpret engineering data and information; prepare clear, concise reports and recommendations.
  • Complete roadway design tasks in Open Roads Designer, AASHTOWare, PCES, Project Wise, and other non‑CADD applications; recognize and analyze significant problems and recommend solutions.
  • Establish effective communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies, and the public; investigate issues and resolve complaints.
  • Use established VDOT policies and procedures to develop and deliver engineering projects, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate engineering program activities to meet deliverables within scope and timeline.
  • Assist in managing projects and tasks—including scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reporting; complete multiple concurrent tasks and provide status updates.
  • Develop and review sub‑components and complete roadway designs from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects; compute quantities and prepare plan assemblies, resolve design problems, and provide technical direction in applying VDOT standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.
  • Manage special program initiatives and projects; represent VDOT or the program area on committees and work groups.
  • Demonstrate customer service and work habits that reflect VDOT Values; coordinate the flow of information orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with diverse audiences.
  • Plan and schedule work.
  • Apply civil engineering principles related to roadway design and standard technical knowledge.
  • Apply design standards, specifications, policies, and procedures.
  • Apply roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications, and materials.
  • Understand principles of roadway safety that impact standards and special designs.
  • Build networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers, and FHWA representatives.
  • Deliver exemplary customer service.
  • Use computers and software applications for engineering and design.
Additional Considerations
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering or related field is desired.
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.
