Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced mechanic familiar with paving equipment repairs and urgent machine down requests to work on the road in the Salem, VA region for JRE. As a Paving Equipment Field Technician, your responsibilities will include:
- Inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, adjusting, and maintaining construction on various types of construction equipment, specifically road paving equipment
- Utilizing problem-solving resources such as DTAC, technical manuals, personal skills, and experience in order to perform diagnosis of equipment problems
- Requesting proper parts needed for repair through the parts department and keeping track of machine status
- Planning and executing the sequence of repairs
- Conducting engine underhauls, head gaskets, rear axle replacement, hydraulic valves and pumps, rock shafts, and transmission repairs
- Preparing accurate inspection and service reports, and maintaining other records as required
- Following company policies and government regulations
- Keeping work areas clean and orderly, while complying with company safety standards
- High School diploma or equivalent experience. Must have a valid, clean driving record to operate a field service truck.
- Vocation or technical degree, or equivalent work experience or training. 3-5 years or more of experience as a mechanic working on diesel equipment, specifically construction and/or forestry equipment is required. Experience as a field technician in heavy equipment industry strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of service department operations, service department operations, and equipment technology.
Field Mechanics regularly work on machines in tight and uncomfortable positions. They may stand for long periods of time while also having to bend, crawl, or lay on their backs when making repairs. Field Mechanics frequently lift objects weighing 50 pounds unassisted and move heavier items (over 50 pounds) with assistance of devices. Field Service Technicians will service machines both in the shop and outside the shop at customer locations.
WorkingConditions
Field Mechanics perform work both in the shop and at customer locations. Occasionally perform work on loose‑footing areas outside of the shop and in the field. There is often exposure to grease, dirt, dust, fumes, drafts, and loud noises of varying levels both in the shop and out. There is also frequent risk of burns, chemical irritations, cuts, strains, bruises, etc.
Field Mechanics will regularly perform work duties outside in adverse weather conditions. To combat these dangers and risk hazards, field service technicians must follow strict safety procedures, proper equipment safety, and PPE.
Requires frequent driving to & from customer locations and the shop.
