Position

Purpose:

The Secondary ESOL Teacher provides specialized English language development instruction and collaborates with educators, families, and support staff to ensure multilingual learners in grades 6–12 have equitable access to rigorous academic learning. Through culturally responsive teaching, evidence-based instructional practices, and meaningful relationships, the teacher fosters an inclusive learning environment where students  linguistic and cultural assets are valued, a strong sense of belonging is cultivated, and every student is empowered to achieve academic, linguistic, and social-emotional success.

The teacher implements services in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements while serving as an advocate for multilingual learners across the school community.

Location: Central High School and South Middle School

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree with appropriate Kansas licensure and Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation

Performance Responsibilities:

Instruction and Student Learning
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plans and delivers standards-based English language development instruction aligned with district curriculum and the KSDE English Learners Proficiency Standards.
  • Plans a program of study that, meets the individual needs, interests, language proficiency levels, and abilities of students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is safe, welcoming, culturally responsive, and conducive to learning while fostering a sense of belonging for all students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of positive classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear content and language objectives for lessons, units, and projects.
  • Employs a variety of evidence-based instructional strategies, technology, and instructional media to meet the diverse linguistic, academic, and social-emotional needs of multilingual learners.
  • Differentiates instruction and provides appropriate language supports and scaffolds to ensure equitable access to grade-level curriculum.
  • Strives to implement through instruction and action the district s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Promotes student independence, self-advocacy, and confidence as multilingual learners.
  • Supports students  social-emotional well-being and successful integration into the school community.
Collaboration and Consultation
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to co-plan instruction, identify appropriate accommodations, and support student success across content areas.
  • Works collaboratively with administrators, counselors, instructional coaches, specialists, social workers, and other staff to address the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of multilingual learners.
  • Works with designated teams to plan and determine appropriate interventions and supports to meet student needs through MTSS and other district processes.
  • Confers with and seeks assistance from district specialists regarding possible learning disabilities or other student needs while considering the impact of second language acquisition.
  • Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessionals, teacher aides, volunteers, and interpreters as appropriate.
  • Provides consultation and professional support to colleagues regarding effective instructional strategies and culturally responsive practices for multilingual learners.
  • Demonstrates effective human relations, communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
Assessment and Compliance
  • Assesses student learning and English language development on a regular basis using multiple sources of data to guide instruction.
  • Administers and supports required state and district English language proficiency assessments and other assessments as assigned.
  • Monitors student progress toward language development and academic goals and provides progress reports as required.
  • Assists with the identification, placement, service delivery, progress monitoring, reclassification, and required monitoring of multilingual learners in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements.
