Shop Mechanic

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Shipping Project Mgr., the incumbent provides skilled mechanical, maintenance and repair services to rebuild large engines and industrial equipment.

• Accepts responsibility for safety of self and others on team.
• Uses and reads micrometers, dial indicators, depth gauges, standard mechanical knowledge, etc.
• Properly uses and maintains hand tools and basic technical equipment.
• Follows all DOT regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers and co‑workers.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral form.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.
• Must be able to comprehend and pass various safety training modules.

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock; and explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
