Utility Mechanic

The Utility Mechanic supports the inspection, repair, rebuilding, and finishing of power cylinders, large engines, and industrial equipment. This position performs incoming material inspections, parts cleaning, disassembly, grinding, precision measuring, assembly, testing, painting, and documentation while following safety and quality requirements.

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The Utility Mechanic may assist with task guidance or training as assigned.

• Inspect incoming materials, parts, cylinders, and components for condition, accuracy, damage, and quality before use or processing.
• Disassemble, clean, repair, and reassemble power cylinders, engine components, and industrial equipment.
• Use precision measuring tools, including micrometers, dial indicators, depth gauges, and related inspection equipment.
• Hand grind, polish, and shape power cylinder ports using die grinders according to layout and material removal requirements.
• Assemble oil lines, pipe plugs, and related components; support hydro testing, painting, tagging, and final paperwork.
• Safely operate and maintain assigned tools and equipment, including hand tools, die grinders, power washers, cranes, hoists, forklifts, hoist straps, cutting torches, and other shop equipment as trained.
• Read and follow safety rules, work instructions, procedures, diagrams, schedules, and verbal or written directions.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area; use required PPE and complete required safety training.
• Communicate job status, quality issues, and safety concerns to supervisors and coworkers.
• Assist with process improvements, written procedures, and training support; perform other duties as assigned.

• Strong mechanical aptitude, practical problem-solving skills, and attention to quality.
• Ability to work independently, follow written/verbal instructions, and ask for assistance when needed.
• Ability to read precision measuring tools and perform basic math, including fractions and decimals.
• Ability to safely operate shop tools and material-handling equipment as trained and authorized.
• Effective communication, organization, and time-management skills.

• High school diploma or GED required; vo-tech, trade school, or related technical training preferred.
• Related experience in mechanical repair, maintenance, cylinder work, grinding, inspection, assembly, or industrial equipment preferred; equivalent education and experience may be considered.

Work is performed in an industrial shop environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, loud noise, heat, wet or humid conditions, fumes, chemicals, outside weather, and other hazards. Safety glasses and hearing protection are required; additional PPE may be required by task. The employee must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, sit at a lift station, use hands and arms repetitively, lift or move up to 25 pounds frequently, and move more than 100 pounds occasionally with assistance or proper equipment.

Required vision includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
