The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to residents in a long‑term care facility, providing resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident, following infection prevention and control policies and personal protective equipment use. Responsibilities include assisting with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, providing psychosocial support, facilitating transfers and mobility, performing range‑of‑motion exercises, and supporting meal service.
The NA documents resident interactions, communicates changes in condition to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive specimens, and participates in housekeeping, laundry, and wellness and recreational programs. The role may also involve participation in departmental or organization committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of starting the position through enrollment in a training program or an endorsement. CNA training and certification are required and provided by the facility.
- Satisfy yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits each year; a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education are required annually. Maintain all department‑specific required certifications.
- When applicable, be certified and registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry in applicable states.
- Depending on facility and responsibilities, the role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver, requiring a motor‑vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license, and must be medically qualified to perform essential driving functions per the Sanford Driving Policy and the leader’s request.
