Responsibilities

Employees in this class perform professional nursing care and treatment to patients in accordance with medical protocols. They develop nursing care plans based on diagnosis, pertinent medical information, patient and family needs, and conduct nursing assessments. Duties include developing, implementing, and evaluating treatment plans; providing patient care and education through case management; and carrying out nursing care processes independently.

Employees may serve as a “charge nurse” overseeing daily nursing care activities on an assigned shift or in a preceptor role, coordinating all licensed and non‑licensed staff duties. They administer medications and treatments as directed by a physician and are responsible for appropriate treatment and medical documentation, working under the general supervision of a higher‑level professional nurse or nurse supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to independently plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Knowledge of medications and the physiological effect of those medications.
  • Ability to communicate information concisely and descriptively, verbally, in writing, or by demonstration.
  • Ability to appropriately respond to emergency situations.
Sign‑On Bonus

A sign‑on bonus of $10,000 may be offered to the successful applicant(s) of this posting, contingent upon 2025‑2026 budget approval.

Eligibility requires a newly hired permanent full‑time or permanent part‑time employee to work 30 to 40 hours per week. Working less than 40 hours results in a prorated bonus. Eligibility exclusions: recent employment within the last 12 months in any North Carolina State government position, prior receipt of a sign‑on bonus from any state agency, and placement or recruitment fees paid by DHHS.

  • 8‑Hour Shifts
    • Day:
      Saturday and Sunday 10%
    • Evening:
      Monday‑Friday 20%, Saturday and Sunday 30%
    • Night:
      Friday‑Sunday 30%, Monday‑Thursday 20%
  • 12‑Hour Shifts
    • Day (7:00 am–7:30 pm):
      No Premiums
    • Evenings/Night (7:00 pm–7:30 am):
      Monday‑Friday 20%, Saturday and Sunday 30%
