The County of Monterey Health Department – Administration and Behavioral Health Bureau, and the County of Monterey Treasurer–Tax Collector are hiring full‑time Accounting Technicians.
AdministrationResponsible for full scope of Accounting Technician duties:
Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, reconciliation, adjusting accounting records, and ensuring disbursement of payroll checks.
Supports day‑to‑day financial operations of the Behavioral Health Bureau: handles high volume of accounting and payment activity, processes reimbursements, vendor payments, and bureau purchasing in accordance with county fiscal policy. Key point of contact for staff and vendors with clear, respectful communication.
Treasurer‑Tax Collector – Revenue DivisionSupports collection, processing, and distribution of court‑ordered fines and fees. Must reconciling accounts, research and post transactions in case management systems, prepare accurate reports, and maintain financial data integrity.
Examples of Duties- Post financial and statistical information to logs, journals, ledgers, and other records; review source documents for accuracy; assign proper account codes.
- Examine, reconcile, and adjust accounting records; resolve problems and make corrective entries.
- Maintain cost accounting records; compute and allocate charges and depreciation; prepare summaries and cost statements.
- Coordinate with departmental personnel and other agencies in evaluating and modifying financial recordkeeping.
- Review and revise clerical accounting systems, procedures, and forms; devise new forms and spreadsheets for reports.
- Prepare periodic summaries of transactions including trial balances, worksheets, and revenue and expense statements.
- Supervise subordinate personnel and participate in selection and training of new employees.
- Principles and practices of bookkeeping.
- Methods, practices, and terminology used in financial and statistical clerical work.
- Office practices and procedures.
- Personal computers and related software such as spreadsheets.
- Intermediate mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, decimals).
- Principles and practices of cost accounting.
- Maintain and reconcile differences with financial recordkeeping systems.
- Perform mathematical computations quickly and accurately.
- Read, write, and prepare accurate records and reports.
- Operate calculator, typewriter, computer, and office equipment.
- Review, code, post, adjust, and summarize fiscal transactions.
- Work with minimal supervision.
- Understand and apply complex policies and procedures.
Any combination of training, education, experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Example:
Eighteen months experience as Senior Account Clerk in Monterey County OR Completion of bookkeeper certificate and six months supervised on‑job training.
- Successfully complete background check including fingerprinting.
- Possess/maintain valid California Class C driver’s license or approved transportation.
- Be available to work flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, emergencies.
