Legal Assistant - Salinas, CA & Oxnard, CA
Full Time Clerical, Oxnard, CA, US
Salary Range: $20.00 To $24.00 Hourly
Responsibilities Primary Responsibilities- Utilize computer hardware and software to produce documents.
- Read and route incoming legal mail; locate and attach appropriate files to correspondence for DOJ Accredited Representative(s) or Attorney(s).
- Compose and type routine and complex correspondence requiring merge documents and graphics.
- Make copies of correspondence or other printed materials.
- Prepare outgoing mail and correspondence, including e‑mail and faxes.
- Assist with the coordination of special events.
- Facilitate completion of immigration applications (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Citizenship, etc.).
- Translate documents from Spanish to English and vice‑versa.
- Provide information to potential immigration applicants.
- Provide necessary follow‑up after intakes to evaluate client eligibility for relief, including legal research and additional client information.
- Assist/coordinate and direct on‑site/off‑site group processing workshops.
- Develop and disseminate programmatic materials.
- Provide administrative and legal support to Attorney(s), DOJ Representatives, and other management staff.
- Assist in maintaining accurate client database and case physical and/or electronic files.
- Conduct initial intake for immigration clients.
- Answer and screen telephone calls and arrange conference calls.
- Coordinate DOJ Accredited Representative or Attorney appointments.
- Assist other office staff with administrative needs.
- Arrange and coordinate travel schedules and reservations for legal team members.
- Organize and maintain file system, file correspondence and other records.
- Greet all visitors/clients and assist them with questions and appointment needs.
- Coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, reserve and prepare facilities for meetings, and record and transcribe minutes.
- Other duties as assigned.
- May involve coordinating and supervising office volunteers.
- High level of professionalism and organization.
- Ability to develop, implement and track day‑to‑day activities.
- Experience working in immigrant communities, communities of color, and low‑income and working‑class communities.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish, or English and another language as needed.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast‑paced environment.
- Self‑motivated and able to work both independently and in conjunction with team members.
- Collaborative team player with a solutions‑oriented approach.
- Dedication to the mission and genuine interest in immigrant and farm worker rights.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills.
- Experience managing and executing across several communications media.
- Flexibility, speed, and precision; ability to adjust quickly to changing priorities.
- Language skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write legal briefs, reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; and present information to managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
- Mathematical skills: ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, etc.; apply basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning ability: solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- None.
- Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school; two years or more of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid California Class C driver’s license and access to an automobile, insurance, and willingness to travel to off‑site locations.
- Typing speed of at least 50 net words per minute (NWPM).
The hourly pay range for this position is $21.00 to $24.00, depending on experience. Benefits include:
