Position: ROAD MAINTENANCE SUPERINTENDENT

Road Maintenance Superintendent – Responsibilities

Under direction, this position plans, coordinates, and supervises the work of the County road and bridge construction and maintenance crews and performs other work as required.

  • Allocates workers and equipment to crews and projects, planning and supervising specific placement for effective and efficient accomplishment of work
  • Requisition s tools and equipment required in performance of maintenance and construction activities
  • Inspects and reviews construction and maintenance work in progress and upon completion to assure compliance with prescribed standards
  • Instructs Road Superintendent, Bridge Superintendent and other workers in the safe and effective methods of construction, repair and maintenance
  • Investigates, evaluates, and takes or recommends action in response to complaints of hazardous or poor road and/or bridge conditions
  • Assists in preparing budget estimates
  • Participates in the selection of Road Superintendents, Bridge Superintendent and crew members
  • Plans, supervises and evaluates the work of Road Superintendents and Bridge Superintendent
  • Communicates with public regarding construction and repair activities
  • Coordinates work with other Public Works divisions and other County departments
  • May represent the Maintenance Division in the absence of assigned manager
Qualifications

Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Thorough knowledge of:
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads; steel, wooden and concrete bridges; culverts; drainage ditches; and related structures
  • The operation, maintenance and capabilities of road and bridge construction and maintenance equipment
  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other health and safety regulations as they relate to road and bridge construction and maintenance
  • The California Vehicle Code as it impacts vehicle and equipment use and transport related to road and bridge construction and maintenance
Working knowledge of:
  • The principles and practices of personnel supervision
  • The function of streets, bridges and highways not only in the movement of people and goods but also in providing access to property and as a part of the area drainage system
  • Topographic maps, road plans, profiles and construction specifications
Skill and Ability to:
  • Develop, implement and evaluate plans to accomplish construction and maintenance projects
  • Estimate resources required and costs for projects and to evaluate expenditures
  • Identify and evaluate potential or existing road or bridge problems and to determine action required
  • Determine personnel, materials and equipment required for road and bridge maintenance or construction projects
  • Read, interpret and explain to others plans, specifications, and profiles used in road and bridge construction and maintenance
  • Perform math calculations required in construction and maintenance planning, allocation, costing and in the maintenance of time and equipment records
  • Plan, supervise and evaluate the work of others and to train, counsel and discipline subordinates
  • Direct, coordinate and instruct others in all facets and levels of road and bridge construction and maintenance work
  • Operate modern office automation equipment
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with all contacted in the course of work

Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. Example:
Two (2) or more years’ experience in a position equivalent to Road Superintendent in Monterey County.

Required Conditions of Employment
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority.
  • Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.
