Under the general direction of the Principal, the Para educator performs a variety of duties assisting teachers in the overall support of instructional activities for students who are enrolled in special education moderate/severe programs and/or mainstream classrooms.
Requirements / QualificationsEducation and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years of higher education study (48 semester units) OR possession of an Associate’s or higher degree OR able to meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics. Prior job‑related experiences, paid or voluntary, with school‑age children or children/individuals with disabilities.
Licenses and
Certifications:
Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver’s License with evidence of insurability;
First Aid;
Complete approved MCOE Crisis Intervention Program within six (6) months of employment and maintain valid certification; CPR Certification within six (6) months of employment;
Program for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing:
Ability to pass the MCOE sign language test within six (6) months of employment.

Qualifications:
Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management and/or Early Childhood Education. Experience working with students with disabilities and implementing behavioral management plans for students.
All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a third party to determine the equivalent U.S. degree and major, and the Foreign Transcript Evaluation must be attached before application consideration. Applicants requiring a reasonable accommodation for the interview or testing process must notify Human Resources three business days prior to an interview or testing date. Accommodations will be provided in accordance with ADA requirements.
Benefits/ Pay Stipends
- $150 per month incentive for Paraeducators working in the DHH program with proficiency in sign language, as certified by MCOE
- $150 per month incentive for Paraeducators with proficiency in Braille and working in a position eligible for this incentive
- $150 per month incentive for Specialized Health Care Procedures if assigned to specific students and trained by MCOE
- $500 annual training incentive to employees who volunteer to participate in training for certification and willingness to administer emergency medications/procedures as defined by contract
