Under the general direction of the Principal, the Para educator performs a variety of duties assisting teachers in the overall support of instructional activities for students who are enrolled in special education moderate/severe programs and/or mainstream classrooms.
Requirements & Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of higher education study (48 semester units); or an Associate’s degree or higher; or ability to meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment knowledge and ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Prior paid or voluntary job‑related experience with school‑age children or individuals with disabilities.
- Valid California Driver’s License with evidence of insurability.
- First Aid certification; completion of approved MCOE Crisis Intervention Program within six (6) months of employment and maintenance of valid certification, CPR certification within six (6) months of employment, and MCOE sign language test for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing program within six (6) months of employment.
- Proof of transcript, letter of introduction, proof of high school graduation, and resume.
- Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management, and/or Early Childhood Education.
- Experience working with students with disabilities and implementing behavioral management plans.
- Monthly stipend of $150 for Paraeducators working in the DHH program with certified sign language proficiency.
- Monthly stipend of $150 for Paraeducators with proficiency in Braille working in an eligible position.
- Monthly stipend of $150 for Paraeducators assigned to Specialized Health Care Procedures and trained by MCOE.
- Annual training incentive of $500 for employees who volunteer for certification and are willing to administer emergency medication procedures.
All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a third party to determine the equivalent U.S. degree and major; the evaluation must be attached to the application before consideration. Accommodations will be provided in accordance with ADA requirements.
