Educational Interpreter (Salinas High School) – Special Ed

Monterey County Office Of Education. Salary: $37.98 – $49.42 per hour. Full‑time position:
Monday–Friday, 6.5 hours/day, 183 days/year.

Job Summary

Under limited supervision of the Principal, the Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and instructional support for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in general and special day classrooms, and during other school activities. Interpreters may substitute in the absence of a primary teacher if they possess an Emergency 30‑Day Substitute Teaching Permit or a teaching credential.

Responsibilities

Providing interpretation using sign language, finger spelling, natural gestures, and speech to facilitate student participation in the classroom and related activities.

Qualifications
  • High‑school‑equivalent education.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficiency in manually coded English (SEE, Signed English, and/or Pigeon Signed English) and American Sign Language (ASL) including finger‑spelling and simultaneous interpreting.
  • Knowledge of the Guidelines of Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Universal health‑precautions training.
  • Minimum score of 4.0 on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA), the Educational Sign Skills Evaluation (ESSE‑I/R), or NAD/ACCI assessment.
  • Valid California driver’s license with evidence of insurability.
  • First Aid and CPR certification within six months of employment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience working with deaf and hard‑of‑hearing population.
  • Coursework in education, psychology, child development, classroom behavior management, or Early Childhood Education.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Awareness of developmental levels in areas of instruction.
  • Knowledge of assistive listening devices including personal hearing aids.
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree.
  • Emergency 30‑Day Substitute Teaching Permit.
  • Teaching Credential.
