Production Manager
Position Summary
Oversees the day-to-day processing activities for a department, a unit, a production line/lines or logistics function. Ensures that assigned schedules or needs are met and that staff adheres to start, stop, and break times. Serves as safety champion for the team to ensure proper food and personal safety policies, processes, and practices are followed at all times. Acts as liaison between line or department members and management on non‑personnel issues.
Trains new employees, assigns or serves as a “buddy” for new employees to ensure proper introduction and inclusion into the group. Assures line or department activities are set up prior to the start of shift and properly closed down based on schedules. Reports all performance, process, or safety concerns to management in a timely manner.
- Coordinate rotation of staff for lunches and breaks.
- Train new personnel or oversee training by an experienced peer; assign a “buddy” to accelerate engagement and safety focus.
- Coordinate response to mechanical, quality or safety downtime issues; notify and follow up with supervisors and maintenance and keep supervision informed of status or potential changes.
- Communicate directions and changes from supervisors to the floor.
- Keep supervision informed of other production problems and suggest corrective actions.
- Work with peer floor coordinators from other departments to coordinate raw materials, components and movement of finished goods, identifying and addressing potential gaps.
- Monitor assigned unit’s equipment/tool condition, calibration and use.
- Reinforce area practices to ensure SOPs are followed for quality checks and corrective action.
- Reinforce area practices that promote a safe work environment, GMP adherence and food safety.
- Manage rework activities.
- Observe and make staffing adjustments with supervisor approval based on schedule changes or other variables such as raw material quality, to maintain quality and productivity in a safe manner.
- Ensure smooth flow of product processing through the assigned area.
- Oversee corrective actions in the event of an EAM or EVM.
- Perform root cause analyses within the functional area to drive Process Improvement.
- Participate in food safety incident review and control.
- Serve as the eyes and ears for management by monitoring flow and progress throughout the shift, reporting any potential or actual problems.
- Encourage peer employees to maintain work areas that are well‑organized, clean, and safe, with everything properly stored or staged.
- Reinforce proper safety habits including proper execution of LOTO with peers.
- Support safety response actions by communicating commands from supervision and reinforcing proper emergency behavior during an emergency event.
- Oversee blend activity for spring mixes and ensure production targets are met.
- Adjust to issues under supervisor direction, evaluate and move product to balance or meet demand requirements, and communicate changes throughout the production network.
- Complete or consolidate assigned paperwork and labeling.
- Identify process improvement opportunities within the area of assignment.
- Serve on process improvement teams to generate change in processes and systems.
- Serve as backup for other unit positions as needed to cover breaks, meals, and absences.
- Employees may infrequently be assigned to perform other tasks on a temporary basis; during the temporary assignment, the employee must maintain compliance with all plant policies but will not be disciplined for productivity‑throughput performance.
- Actively support the other members of the employee’s work team, including assisting with cross‑training, new‑hire/buddy assignments, and process support during breaks, meal periods, and other staff coverage as needed.
Skills & Qualifications Desired
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously on a daily basis.
- Understanding and interpretation of production work orders, assisting team specialists in a wide variety of daily activities, including taking roll call, identifying and preventing production problems, and filling in for absent employees.
