Seed Physiology Associate Scientist
Location: Sakata Seed America, Inc.
Pay Range: $80,000 – $84,000 per year.
Job SummaryProgressively initiate, coordinate and implement research and development projects focused on seed diagnostic biology, seed production and enhancement technology to improve seed physiological quality at Sakata Seed America.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Design, implement and analyze multidisciplinary research experiments to improve seed and seedling physiological quality.
- Develop and refine technologies, protocols and procedures that enhance the physiological quality of stock and commercial seed.
- Plan and conduct multiple research and development projects in an organized and timely manner, in partnership with QA, R&D, Marketing and Supply Chain departments.
- Translate dynamic business requirements into short‑term and mid‑term research projects.
- Analyze data from internal and external projects and communicate results effectively, both orally and in written reports.
- Maintain the research laboratory and greenhouse, ensuring safety and productivity.
- Supervise and train lab technicians and interns on laboratory operations and equipment usage.
- Perform any other seed biology and technology development duties as reasonably required.
- Work primarily in a laboratory environment with some greenhouse and field work.
- Minimum five years of research experience in seed science and technology.
- Proven track record in developing practical solutions in horticulture or seed technology.
- Competency in seed quality, testing, storage behavior and germination/dormancy.
- Strong experiment design, data analysis and image processing skills.
- Hands‑on experience in cell biology and molecular biology.
- Creative mindset with a pragmatic, results‑driven attitude.
- Attention to detail and ability to perform job activities accurately and efficiently.
- Comfortable working in agricultural environments, including exposure to chemicals and temperature extremes.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing work demands and techniques.
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in plant biology, horticulture, agronomy or a related field with emphasis on seed science or vegetable physiology.
- Computer literacy and data analysis skills.
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Minimum five years of research experience in vegetable or seed science in industry or public sector.
- Work in a environment with hot and cold temperatures for up to 15% of the time.
- Exposure to chemicals, pesticides and other substances; must wear personal protective equipment as required.
- Work in dusty conditions; may work alone and without direct supervision for extended periods.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Availability for overtime, weekends and holidays as needed.
- Salary: $80,000 – $84,000 per year.
