Position Summary
Monterey County Probation Department seeks experienced individuals for the Juvenile Institutions Officer II position. Incumbents will work independently with general supervision to provide counseling, maintain safety and security for juveniles in custody, enforce facility rules, supervise transportation, vocational work crews, and prepare reports and evaluations. The role also serves as a mentor for new Juvenile Institutions Officer I staff.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain security and safety for staff and minors; conduct searches of clients at entry and as required.
- Assess behavior of clients and prepare individual progress reports; submit to Juvenile Court; complete incident reports and departmental documentation.
- Conduct special assignments such as Home Supervision, Be Aware Program, and Resource Team for crisis intervention and supportive services.
- Orient youth in facilities by distributing rules, demonstrating procedures, and explaining legal and custodial procedures.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions.
- Organize recreational and work skill programs; oversee routine cleaning and maintenance.
- Transport and supervise minors to appointments, court appearances, and hospitals.
- Collaborate with superiors, probation officers, co‑workers, and resource persons on institutional procedures and behavioral issues.
- Physically intervene in confrontations and restrain violent minors until behavior is controlled.
- Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
- Maintain health measures for minors; dispense medication and document in medical logs; administer CPR and First Aid as needed.
- Serve as Officer In Charge or shift supervisor in the absence of the Chief Officer.
- At least 12 months experience as a Juvenile Institutions Officer I or equivalent.
- Completed required training:
Juvenile CORE, S.T.C., and 24 hours annual S.T.C. training. - Physical strength and dexterity to physically restrain hostile juveniles.
- Valid California Class III Driver’s License upon appointment.
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ownership of a firearm and use of officer safety equipment as required.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification within 60 days of employment.
- Current Juvenile Institutions Officer CORE and PC 832 certificates.
Approximate requirements: 30 units of college coursework in Administration of Justice, Psychology, Recreation, or related fields; or equivalent experiential training.
Conditions of Employment- Citizenship or permanent residency with U.S. citizenship status within 60 days.
- Minimum age 21.
- High School diploma or GED.
- No felony convictions.
