CTE Cosmetology Teacher

Saline High School and the South & West Washtenaw Consortium are seeking a qualified educator to deliver high-quality, competency-based CTE Cosmetology instruction aligned with state standards and Career Ready Practices. This role prepares students for careers in cosmetology, including hair design, esthetics, nail technology, and salon management, while building foundational knowledge in sanitation, client care, safety, and professional ethics. The instructor will integrate academic and technical skills, support work-based and experiential learning, maintain a safe and effective salon learning environment, and cultivate partnerships with industry and postsecondary institutions to ensure program relevance and student career readiness.

Required Education/Certification

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid State Cosmetology License required.
• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate as detailed below:
• Standard CTE Certificate in Cosmetology through a CTE-approved program, CIP 12.0401 OR
• Annual Authorization/Endorsement in the assigned program and a minimum of at least four thousand hours of recent and relevant (last ten years) work experience in the Cosmetology industry.
• If hired to teach under an Annual Career Authorization, the individual must begin the process of earning the required CTE endorsement in accordance with state guidelines within three years.

Preferred Education/Certification

• Bachelor's degree in education.

Required Experience

• Hands-on experience in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, or related salon industry roles.
• Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with coworkers and all stakeholders.
• Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrate proficiency with computer applications for instructional planning, student assessment, recordkeeping, and communication (e.g., student information systems, grading software, email, presentation tools, and online learning platforms).

Preferred Experience

• Experience teaching, mentoring, or training students in a classroom, lab, or salon setting.
• Experience supervising students in work-based learning, salon internships, or clinical experiences.
• Experience supporting diverse student populations, managing classrooms, and documenting student performance.
• Experience tracking students' Minimum Practical Applications.
• Experience with State reporting of monthly hours.
• Experience with Power School.
• Use of Informed K12 or other electronic document management systems.
• Experience collaborating with staff and stakeholders across multiple locations within an organization.

• Design, implement, and continuously improve a competency-based Cosmetology curriculum aligned with state standards and Career Ready Practices.
• Deliver engaging instruction integrating technical skills, academic content, and client service principles.
• Monitor, document, and communicate student progress, including technical competency and career readiness.
• Communicate regularly with students, parents, and colleagues regarding student progress and program updates.
• Support work-based learning opportunities, including salon internships, community partnerships, and industry experiences.
• Plan and supervise field trips, CTSO competitions, and other experiential learning activities, including overnight or weekend travel as required.
• Facilitate student leadership and enrichment opportunities (e.g., CTSOs, salon events).
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized salon classroom environment, including proper handling of tools, chemicals, and equipment.
• Build and maintain partnerships with employers, postsecondary institutions, and industry organizations to ensure curriculum relevance.
• Participate in professional development and contribute to program improvement.

• Accurately document and maintain records of student attendance, lab hours, and clinical/technical training hours to meet state licensing and program requirements.
• Manage the program budget, including ordering supplies, equipment, and instructional materials.
• Complete and maintain CIP self-review documentation to ensure program compliance with state and consortium standards.
• Making quick, sound decisions in a lab setting to ensure student safety and proper technique.
• Communicating effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and industry partners.
