Main Purpose of JobA DJS Assistant Superintendent Residential Facility I is the first managerial level of work overseeing the daily administration, management, and overall operation of a large Department of Juvenile Services facility. Employees in this classification function as deputies to Facility Superintendents and assume full responsibility for the facility or facilities in the absence of the Superintendent. Employees in this classification manage the work of employees providing services to resident youth through subordinate DJS Supervisors.
Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays and may be subject to call-in based on staffing needs or emergency situations.
- Education:
High School diploma or GED certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission Regulation. - Experience:
Two years of experience supervising staff in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for at-risk youth. - Note:
An Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to one year of the required general experience. A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences from an accredited college or university may be substituted for up to two years of the required general experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Candidate will be flexible with work schedule, have the ability to work evening hours, have the ability to teach, train and build effective teams within the facility, be safety and security-minded, and be able to prioritize workflow to meet deadlines and implement systems and schedules.
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree in the social or behavioral sciences or criminal justice from an accredited four-year college or university is preferred.
- Candidates appointed to positions in this classification must obtain certification by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
- Employees may be assigned duties requiring the operation of a motor vehicle and must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland.
- Employees must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS staff within 365 days of initial appointment or placement in this classification and maintain certification while employed.
