Position: 4-H Stem Agent Associate

4‑H STEM Agent Associate

The Office of Extension at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore seeks applicants for the position of 4‑H STEM Agent Associate. This twelve‑month, full‑time role includes a comprehensive benefits package and requires availability for extended hours during exhibits, fairs, conventions, conferences, evenings, weekends, and travel outside the Lower Shore region. The incumbent will lead hands‑on, age‑appropriate STEM activities for K‑12 youth across the state, particularly in outdoor and community‑based settings, and support UMES Extension’s mission to engage underserved and rural youth through mobile outreach.

Responsibilities
  • Drive and park the 38‑ft 4‑H Mobile STEM Lab to outreach locations.
  • Coordinate site visits, manage scheduling, and arrange all travel logistics.
  • Facilitate engaging STEM lessons for K‑12 youth of varying scientific literacy.
  • Develop new curriculum materials tailored to local community needs.
  • Maintain and restock materials and ensure lab cleanliness and operational readiness.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
  • Collect and report data related to program implementation and outcomes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • B.A. in Education, Child Development, Leadership, Recreation, Environmental or other Natural Science, Agriculture, Engineering, or other relevant STEM field.
  • Four years of experience (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree) and appropriate certification will be given consideration.
  • Experience working with K‑12 youth in nonformal settings.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to confidently lead STEM educational activities, especially in outdoor environments.
  • Ability to work with K‑12 youth of various backgrounds and levels of scientific literacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work on a team.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Flexible attitude and ability to adapt to changes in plans.
  • Organized, neat, and attentive to detail.
  • Capability to build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).
Physical Demands
  • Extended periods of standing, bending, stooping, and sitting at a desk.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Communication with a variety of constituents externally and internally.
  • Operation of a variety of office equipment.
Preferences
  • Ability to drive and park a 38‑ft converted charter bus (CDL preferred but not required).
  • Aptitude for vehicle mechanics and maintenance.
  • Experience with UMES, Extension, or 4‑H.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
