Salary

Commensurate with certification and experience based on the Wicomico County Salary Schedule for Teachers.

Hours

Full time 10-month position (190 contract days). Contract Unit:
This position is part of the Unit I (Certificated) bargaining unit. FLSA:

Qualifications

At the time of the application, candidate must hold or be eligible for a current Teacher of the Blind/Visually Impaired Certification. Dual certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist is preferred. Minimum of bachelor's degree and qualification for MSDE TVI certification required, with the ability to obtain certification in special education. General knowledge of visual impairments, including causes, manifestations, and adaptations.

Knowledge of special education principles specific to visual impairment and its impacts, practices, and procedures, including developing and writing IEP's, 504 Accommodation Plans, and performing appropriate teaching techniques. Some knowledge of medical disorders such as seizures or restrictions; adaptive technology, alternate modes of communication; and / or orthopedic impairment. Knowledge of the UEB and Nemeth braille codes, and ability to research and apply all braille codes if needed in a student's curriculum.

Must be able to drive from one location to another in order to provide services to students.

Responsibilities

Function as a service provider and/or case manager teaching students with visual impairment or multiple disabilities Birth to 21 years of age. Facilitate and/or participate in the development, review, and evaluation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and coordinated services. Conduct evaluations to include Functional Vision Assessments, Learning Assessments, and Cortical Vision Impairment (CVI) inventories, and write assessments. Provide instruction on the use of technology, low vision devices, Expanded Core Curriculum areas, and access to materials of instruction.

Provide UEB and Nemeth braille instruction (reading and writing) and on use of tactile materials and tactile graphics. Collaborate with special education and general education teachers to assure the provision of accessible materials of instruction and implementation of the IEP. Provide regular consultation and support to parents, classroom teachers, other school personnel, and students' sighted peers. Provide strategies for the student's safe, independent movement.

Other duties as assigned.
