SURVICE Engineering is currently seeking a Metallurgical Engineer to support our Aberdeen Research Operation. You will accelerate your career and become an integral team member within the defense community.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities- Develop novel alloys and post-processing to improve performance of conventionally produced cast, wrought, and welded structural metals. In particular, the researcher will characterize novel materials and processes such that the performance improvements can be quantified for future Army systems integration.
- The researcher would help develop optimal heat treatment and alloying strategies to enhance the performance of structural metals across a range of Army protection and lethality applications. Knowledge and proper application of metals characterization and testing methods is critical to develop the structure-property-processing relationships that inform Army systems level materials selection. The developed alloys and processing technologies are intended to optimize weight, performance, and/or durability, and where possible, optimize manufacturing and processing technologies that minimize cost and maximize functionality.
- Develop, demonstrate, prototype and evaluate new, improved or novel structural materials to enable technologies that can be applied with unique processing strategies.
- The researcher would then characterize the resulting material using metallography and electron microscopy to assess the microstructure of the alloy and thermal characterization and mechanical testing to assess the properties of the alloy. Knowing both, the researcher will then modify future materials to further improve upon the alloy.
- The researcher would be expected to learn (if not already familiar with) and develop expertise in machining (grinding, milling and grit blasting), casting, forging, rolling, welding, heat treatment, fixture and machine fabrication, materials characterization (polishing and microscopy), mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, and impact). Support tasks are complex and require a strong multidisciplinary scientific, physics, and engineering background.
- The researcher will document processing, characterization, and testing through written reports including graphical and statistical analysis. Further contextualization of results with historic data from digital and hard-copy resources will be required to determine trends and guide further investigation; utilization of machine learning models as well as standard trend fitting will be used to assess alloy and processing improvements.
- Basic knowledge of materials and manufacturing technologies
- Experience in mechanical testing
- Knowledge and/or experience in structural alloy development
- Knowledge and/or experience with machining
- Preferred/Optional:
- Knowledge and experience with structural alloy development
- Knowledge and/or training in welding
- Demonstrated experience with developing structure-processing-property relationships
- Demonstrated expertise in structural alloy characterization and analysis
- Author/co-author of publication(s) pertaining to structural alloy development
- Lead presenter on conference presentation
