This is an INTERNAL RECRUITMENT FOR CONTRACTUAL MDE EMPLOYEES WITHIN THE WETLANDS AND WATERWAYS PROTECTION PROGRAM, TIDAL WETLANDS DIVISION ONLY. The Natural Resources Planner I will provide support to senior staff in reviewing permit applications, preparing draft documentation, and helping to process requests related to tidal wetlands and water quality certification. The incumbent will also assist in coordinating with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under the Maryland State Programmatic General Permit (MDSPGP). This entry‑level planning position is intended to provide foundational experience in natural resource planning and environmental regulation.
With training and guidance, the incumbent will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to advance in the field of wetland and water quality management. The position includes opportunities to attend site visits, interagency meetings, and outreach activities to gain experience in environmental planning and regulatory review. The incumbent will learn to interpret and apply environmental laws and policies, assist with drafting correspondence, and help coordinate with other agencies and the public on matters related to tidal wetlands and water quality protection.
Work involves exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings, inclement weather, and hazardous conditions. Site visits may be conducted in marshes, waterways, and along exposed tidal shorelines. Special physical demands include lifting 50 pounds or more, climbing ladders, and using protective equipment such as goggles, gloves, and masks during site visits.
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science or natural resources planning, management or development.
