GENERAL FUNCTION
The Director of Technology for Wicomico County Public Schools provides strategic and operational leadership for the district’s technology services, ensuring technology investments enable safe, equitable, and effective teaching and learning while supporting efficient district operations. This role partners with multiple departments including curriculum and instructional leaders to deliver reliable instructional technology (devices, classroom systems, learning platforms, and digital resources), oversees enterprise applications and infrastructure, leads and develops technology teams, manages vendor partnerships, and ensures strong cybersecurity, data privacy, and risk-management practices.
QUALIFICATIONS- Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. Bachelor’s degree with equivalent training/experience is a minimum requirement.
- Seven years of progressive leadership experience in information technology, technology operations, or a closely related area. Education industry expertise is preferred, but private or public sector experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing business applications and enterprise technology services in a complex, multi-site environment (K-12 district experience strongly preferred).
- Proven ability to manage large budgets (including multi-million-dollar operating and/or capital budgets) with strong financial stewardship.
- Strong project/program leadership skills, including scope definition, stakeholder alignment, risk management, and delivery execution.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Experience leading K-12 technology initiatives such as SIS and LMS deployments, device programs (1:1), classroom technology modernization, assessment platforms, and system integrations (SSO/rostering/data exchange) preferred.
- Working knowledge of cybersecurity and student/staff data privacy practices, including vendor privacy reviews and compliance expectations (e.g., FERPA, COPPA, and state requirements) preferred.
- Experience with cloud services and modern K-12 environments, including identity platforms, MDM for student/staff devices, collaboration suites, instructional technology ecosystems and Microsoft M365 or Google Cloud services preferred.
- Understanding of accessibility requirements and inclusive technology practices (e.g., WCAG concepts, assistive technology, and supporting diverse learner needs) preferred.
- Strong vendor management and contract negotiation experience, including licensing and SaaS subscriptions preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to build a service-oriented culture, improve processes, and mature IT governance preferred.
- Analytical mindset with experience using metrics to drive operational performance and customer satisfaction preferred.
- Serve as a principal advisor and consultant to the Chief Finance & Operations Officer on matters related to strategies and planning for all divisions of technology in Wicomico County Public Schools.
- Develop and execute a multi-year technology strategy and roadmap aligned to WCPS organizational objectives, service expectations, and budget constraints.
