Job Overview
Crane Operator positions available in Saluda, VA & Annapolis, MD, and Hagerstown, MD.
- Saluda, VA & Annapolis, MD – NCCCO (or CIC) with LAT/LBT designation; pile‑driving experience preferred.
- Hagerstown, MD – NCCCO (or CIC) with LAT and TLL designation.
Operates lattice boom and telescopic/hydraulic cranes to perform duties for heavy highway/bridge construction projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Check all fluids before starting the engine.
- Level the crane using inside‑cab controls and the level‑bubble.
- Observe load rigging or hook‑up and determine safety using the load chart; always operate within chart parameters.
- Use standard hand signals for communication.
- Manipulate or depress crane controls such as pedals, levers, and buttons to regulate speed, direction, and hoist movement.
- Operate smoothly and in a controlled manner.
- Use appropriate hoisting attachments (hook, sling, electromagnet, or bucket) as the load requires.
- Clean and maintain the crane and hoisting mechanism.
- Inspect the crane for defective parts and notify the supervisor immediately of any defects or malfunctions.
- Operate the crane safely and responsibly.
- NCCCO (or CIC) with LAT and TLL designations required.
- DOT medical card required.
- 5+ years of related experience and/or training.
- Experience must be commensurate with project requirements (e.g., bridge or utility experience, use of hydraulic or friction cranes).
- Ability to determine the weight of items being picked and confirm lift limits via charts.
- Ability to calculate safe load levels from charts.
- Strong reasoning ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
- Excellent communication skills to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training. Experience required to align with project specifics such as bridge or utility work, and hydraulic or friction crane operation.
Language SkillsEnglish proficiency: read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports.
Physical Demands- Use of arms, hands, feet for operator controls 100% of the time.
- Climb on and off machinery, sit on machinery.
- Stoop or kneel daily for routine maintenance.
- Work or walk on uneven ground or floating equipment; access barges, boats, and piers from moving surfaces.
- Maintain vision and hearing for detailed tasks at close and distant ranges; tolerate vibration and rough terrain.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and occasional toxic or caustic chemicals.
- High noise levels and high activity around other equipment and workers.
- Work in isolated or tight, high‑traffic areas.
Base pay range: $37.00/hr – $45.00/hr compensation decisions consider education, experience, licensure, certifications, location, and internal equity.
