Job Title:

Plant Technician – Instrument and Electrical (2 openings).

Location:

Brandon Shores Power Plant, Brandon Shores, Baltimore, MD (Pasadena area). Reports to Production Supervisor. The Brandon Shores Plant is a fully scrubbed coal‑fired generating station.

Salary: $95,000.00 – $ annually, adjusted based on experience and other job‑related factors. Successful candidates also participate in Talen Energy’s Short‑Term Incentive program.

Primary Purpose & Summary

Perform tests on new and in‑service equipment such as cables, power transformers, circuit breakers, motors, DCS (Ovation), Continuous Emissions Monitors, instrumentation, PLCs (Allen Bradley), and water chemistry equipment. Troubleshoot, test, repair, maintain, and calibrate a variety of electrical/pneumatic control equipment for power plant equipment. Work with both AC and DC equipment at voltages of 125V, 250V, 480V, 24/48

Vdc, and 120

Vac.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical equipment utilizing a variety of test equipment and tools.
  • Perform critical instrument calibrations.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain Continuous Emissions Monitors.
  • Switch circuit breakers and transformers.
  • Execute lock out/tag out of electrical equipment in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Work with AC and DC electrical equipment.
  • Accept rotating shift work, holidays, weekends, and short overtime notice.
  • Skills and Competencies
    • Proficient at reading and understanding electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&’s, and one‑line drawings.
    • Able to use test equipment such as multimeters, process calibrators, and pneumatic equipment. General knowledge of process controls.
    • Understands the operation and use of PLCs.
    • Skilled in using multimeters, process calibrators, and pneumatic equipment.
    • Inputs data into a work management system (Maximo).
    • Analytical, with the ability to adopt an effective course of action.
    • Establishes and maintains a cooperative and effective working relationship with others.
    • Responsive to unplanned call‑ins, weekend work, and schedule changes.
    Education and Experience
    • Post‑high school courses in AC/DC electrical theory/equipment applications or over five years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education/training and experience.
    • Experience in report preparation.
    • Strong knowledge of mathematics and ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and drawings.
    • Knowledge and application of safety procedures and practices involving work on high‑voltage equipment.
    • Demonstrated reliability, responsibility, and ability to make quick and effective technical decisions.
    Licenses and Certifications
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards.
    Physical and Mental Demands

    Physical Demands:

    • Work at Power Plant and outdoor environment in adverse conditions.
    • Climb stairs, ladders, and work on elevated platforms; stand for long periods.
    • Lift 45lb overhead and 75lb from floor to 36in.
    • Travel to other facilities if needed.
    • Work near or around high voltage equipment.
    • Work in dusty environments with respirator use; work at heights requiring fall protection.
    • Use manual dexterity to manipulate keyboards and equipment.

    Mental Demands:

    • Use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information, and documents.
    • Analyze and solve complex problems; observe and interpret situations.
    • Use math and mathematical reasoning; meet changing and intensive deadlines.
    • Interact with internal and external clients; maintain concentration under time constraints.
    Work Environment
    • Exposure to outside weather, wet or humid conditions.
    • Work near moving mechanical parts; potential exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, electrical shock, and vibration.
    • Hazards from power tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures, confined spaces.
    • Noise exposure may occur in power plant or other locations with heavy industrial equipment.
