The Transportation Technician will perform administrative, technical, and geographic information systems (GIS) support work for the Transportation Planning Department. This employee will prepare maps and graphics, support data analysis, maintain records and documentation, assist with MPO board and committee operations, and play an important role in supporting regional transportation initiatives by maintaining accurate geospatial data, preparing technical materials, and assisting staff with project coordination and reporting.
This employee will serve as the contract Transportation Technician for members performing required transportation planning work contained within the contract-required work.
- Provide daily administrative and technical support to Transportation Planning staff and department leadership.
- Coordinate logistics for MPO board and committee meetings (TAC, TCC, and advisory committees), including assembling agenda packets and supporting hybrid meeting formats.
- Record and prepare accurate and professional meeting minutes.
- Maintain physical and electronic filing systems in compliance with North Carolina public records retention requirements.
- Assist with department invoices, track project expenditures, and assist with the preparation of quarterly reimbursement reports to agencies such as NCDOT.
- Assist with formatting, editing, and proofing transportation plans, grant documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Develop clear, professional-quality maps and graphics for transportation studies, board presentations, grant applications, and public-facing documents using ESRI software.
- Support transportation planners in collecting, verifying, and analyzing demographic, socioeconomic, traffic, and transportation data for long‑range transportation plans, Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) development, corridor studies, and prioritization processes.
- Perform routine spatial analysis and quality control checks to maintain accuracy of regional GIS datasets.
- Maintain and update transportation‑related geospatial layers and databases.
- Assist with data visualization tools and interactive mapping applications used for MPO planning initiatives.
- Support preparation of materials related to locally administered projects and regional prioritization efforts.
- Additional job duties will be required as assigned.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Working knowledge of ESRI GIS software (ArcGIS Pro preferred)
- Ability to learn new data systems, mapping tools, and project tracking platforms
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to prepare professional and accurate meeting minutes.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with local governments, NCDOT staff, consultants, and the public
- Ability to work collaboratively in a regional planning environment
- An associate's degree in geography, GIS, urban and regional planning, information technology, business administration, or related field.
- At least two (2) years of professional experience in GIS, administrative support, data management, or technical transportation planning support.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.
Work is performed primarily in an office environment, with occasional field support as needed.
