Job Summary

This is a travel nursing position on a primary cardiac and stroke stepdown unit a fast-paced, high-acuity environment that typically turns over 78 to 90 patients per week. Nurses with a 6-patient assignment can expect to turn over their complete assignment and start over within a single shift. A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges. The unit currently houses COVID-positive patients utilizing opti-flow and BiPAP, and the high-acuity side (23-bed side of CTU) operates as a COVID unit taking patients on opti-flow and acute BiPAPs during a COVID surge.

Key

Responsibilities
  • Care for stable pre- and post-procedure cardiac patients, including pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators, cardiac catheterization, and TR bands
  • Manage post-uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedure and cardiac interventions without sheath(s)
  • Provide care for patients presenting with unstable angina, low-risk chest pain evaluation, CHF, dysrhythmias, all new CVA, and TIA patients
  • Manage patients on non-rebreather mask with stable O2 saturation (must be on pulse ox)
  • Titrate and run multiple drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and others
  • Titrate Cardizem drips per unit protocols
  • Utilize unit systems including Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR for medication administration, documentation, and communication
  • Participate in self-scheduling per unit guidelines with oversight from leadership to balance unit needs
  • Complete 36-hour unit orientation; must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
  • Comply with float requirements as directed
  • Meet weekend requirements: every other weekend, 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in a 6-week period
  • Respond to on-call requirements; frequency of on-call depends on patient census
  • Adhere to scrub requirements: navy blue or white scrubs, or a mixture;
    Novant t-shirts permitted all days; jackets must match uniform material and color (no fleece); no crocs with holes
Required Skills
  • IV start proficiency
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Pre- and post-procedure patient care for cardiac patients
  • Experience with cardiac drips
  • PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) experience
  • Ability to manage patients with non-rebreather mask (stable O2 saturation)
  • Comfort and proficiency titrating Cardizem drips
  • Experience managing cardiac and stroke patient diagnoses (unstable angina, CHF, dysrhythmias, CVA, TIA)
  • Familiarity with Pyxis, Dimensions (EPIC), and SBAR
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-turnover unit with 1:5 6 patient ratios; must be comfortable taking 6 patients including surge
Education Requirements
  • Active RN License required
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required
  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification required
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification required
  • Must pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialty
Required Experience
  • Minimum 2 years of experience required; must have similar experience with ratios and acuity this is a challenging and very busy unit
  • Travel nursing experience: first-time travelers accepted
  • Local candidates accepted
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
  • High-acuity, fast-paced stepdown cardiac and stroke unit
  • Typical patient turnover of 78 90 patients per week; a nurse with a 6-patient assignment may turn over their complete assignment within a shift
  • Target patient ratio: 1:5 6; ratios may fluctuate based on unit needs; travelers must be comfortable taking 6 patients during surge
  • Unit accepts contract lengths of 13 26 weeks
