  • PAINTER I L $19.11 – $23.73

General Description

Performs various painting maintenance and finishing work on interior and/or exterior surfaces.

Examples of Work Performed
  • Assists in the coordination of the paint schedule.
  • Performs routine and moderately complex maintenance and repairs on interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, and various equipment and facilities.
  • Plans and prepares all facets of painting projects, including measuring, cleaning, caulking, masking, scaffolding assembly, spackling, floating mud, mixing, and preparing paints and finishes.
  • Removes old paint and finishes from surfaces. Prepares surfaces using sandblaster, sandpaper, wire brushes, steel wool, and/or scraper, and stripping compounds. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, pressure washing, plaster, or other filler.
  • Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and/or protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other surfaces.
  • Performs painting maintenance and repair work to woodwork, shelving, furniture, and cabinetry; applies specialized wall and ceiling covering; may make limited repairs to drywall and ceilings.
  • Paints surfaces using different techniques and tools, e.g., feather, brush, roller, cloth, airless spray equipment, and/or conventional spray equipment.
  • Disposes of waste and hazardous materials in accordance with prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures; maintains the cleanliness of painting facilities and equipment; maintains inventory of materials; performs graffiti removal.
  • Performs all work in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Moves or assists in the removal of furniture and other heavy equipment to facilitate painting; assists other trades workers with special projects involving painting and various maintenance work.
  • Operates various automobiles and transport vehicles, e.g., car, utility truck, utility van.
  • Completes necessary paperwork and reports as it relates to work projects.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Description of Levels

PAINTER I

Performs entry-level to moderately complex (journey-level) work in the maintenance and repair of interior and exterior surfaces. Work involves assessing and preparing surfaces before applying paint or finish, maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment, and utilizing ladders, scissors lifts, or a bucket truck to access the workspace. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

  • Assists in the coordination of the paint schedule.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
PAINTER II

Performs advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of interior and exterior surfaces. Work involves assessing and preparing surfaces before applying paint or finish, maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment, and utilizing ladders, scissors lifts, or a bucket truck to access the workspace. May serve as a lead worker providing direction to others. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

  • Coordinates the paint schedule.
  • Develops plans and specifications for maintenance and renovation projects.
