Maintenance Worker – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District
Location: Sallisaw, Oklahoma
This position supports the maintenance, repair, and operation of navigation infrastructure and associated equipment throughout the Oklahoma portion of the McClellan‑Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, which includes five locks and dams, approximately 137 miles of navigation channel, and numerous structures, facilities, vehicles, vessels, and mechanical systems.
Responsibilities- Assist with the maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of lock and dam components including tainter gates, miter gates, valves, hoists, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, pumps, piping systems, navigation aids, mooring equipment, and structural components.
- Rig, guide, and assist crane operations during the installation and removal of heavy loads such as stop logs, bulkheads, center posts, sector arms, gears, dewatering pumps, and scaffold sections.
- Assemble, disassemble, and maintain scaffolding used for inspection and repair of lock and dam structures.
- Install, replace, and adjust side seals, gate cables, cathodic protection devices, mooring bit components, sector gears, ladders, handrails, and related infrastructure.
- Perform concrete repair work by constructing forms, placing reinforcing steel, mixing and finishing concrete, dry‑packing vertical surfaces, and resetting embedded items.
- Construct and repair wood structures including storage bins, crane mats, scaffold flooring, dock timbers, and related facilities using hand and power tools.
- Prepare metal and concrete surfaces through scraping, grinding, and sandblasting operations.
- Apply protective coatings including vinyl, enamel, lacquer, epoxy, and anti‑fouling paints using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Operate trucks, forklifts, pumps, compressors, generators, and other motorized equipment used in maintenance operations.
- Perform flame cutting, arc welding, and non‑critical steel repair projects.
- Assist pile‑driving operations by positioning piles, handling taglines, and measuring penetration.
- Maintain navigation channels and structures through debris removal, brush cutting, snagging operations, loading and transporting equipment, and fabrication of rope bumpers.
- Load equipment and materials onto barges and assist with transportation between project sites.
- Respond to emergencies including high‑water events, accidents, and other operational contingencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in awkward positions. Employees regularly lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally handle heavier items with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
The position requires climbing ladders, scaffolding, lock structures, and dam facilities, as well as working at significant heights and in confined spaces below water level. Safe work practices and strict adherence to established safety procedures are essential.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed primarily outdoors and in industrial environments associated with lock and dam operations. Employees work on barges, boats, dams, lock structures, maintenance facilities, and navigation channels.

Employees are required to use appropriate personal protective equipment, including hard hats, life jackets, safety harnesses, lifelines, scaffolding systems, safety nets, rubber boots, respirators, masks, and sandblasting hoods.
