Position: Tax Managing Director, Core Tax Services - Corporate/ASC 740

Job Description

The Tax Managing Director applies industry-specific knowledge to advise clients on the tax implications of their business operations, selects alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and identifies compliant methods for tax regulations. They serve as the primary client contact for complex tax issues, communicate potential risks, and make top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies.

The role also involves direct supervision under the partner, participation in marketing, networking, and business development, and maintaining client relationships.

Job Duties
  • Tax Compliance
    • Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens.
    • Maintain internal compliance with firm policies, the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM), and engagement management metrics.
    • Practice hands‑on client service delivery and encourage adherence to TQM policies such as engagement letters and documentation.
  • Research
    • Identify when research is needed and frame issues clearly.
    • Develop research methodology and serve as technical reviewer of WTAs where applicable.
  • ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
    • Apply firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding FAS 109 and FIN 48.
    • Use expertise in international tax, valuation allowance credits, business combinations, and stock‑based compensation.
    • Review and apply income tax provisions efficiently.
  • Tax Consulting
    • Develop, recommend, and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce current and future taxes.
    • Combine tax knowledge with business/industry understanding to recommend solutions.
    • Apply general knowledge of multiple tax specialties (International, SALT, Estate Planning) for issue identification and resolution.
  • Tax Specialization
    • Develop in‑depth understanding of one or more areas of taxation (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state/local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits, incentives, compensation, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits).
    • Demonstrate expert knowledge of standards and act as an industry expert.
    • Advises clients on tax implications and recommends alternative compliance methods.
  • Strategy Development
    • Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or firm personnel by reducing taxes or expenses and providing non‑tax benefits.
    • Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients when required.
  • Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Supervise associates, senior associates, and managers as dictated by the situation.
  • Review work prepared by associates and senior associates, providing review comments.
  • Act as a career advisor to associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Schedule and manage workload of associates, senior associates, and managers.
  • Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
  • Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • 10+ years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience.
  • Prior supervisory experience required.
  • Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
  • CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required.
  • Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
  • Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective delegation, strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Team‑oriented, capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
  • Ability to compose written tax advice and maintain client relationships.
  • Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions.
