General

Purpose:

Richey May is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Tax Associate to join our growing tax practice. This entry-level role is ideal for an individual looking to build a strong foundation in public accounting while gaining exposure to a variety of tax engagements. The Tax Associate will support client service teams in delivering accurate, timely tax compliance and will begin developing the skills needed to provide proactive, high-quality tax solutions.

This individual will play a key role in preparing tax returns, supporting client engagements, and contributing to the team's overall success and growth.

Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, a proactive approach to learning, and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines with professionalism. Richey May invests heavily in developing our Tax Associates, offering structured mentorship, ongoing training, and a clear path toward becoming a Senior Tax Associate and beyond.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Tax Compliance & Support:
  • Prepare Tax Returns: Prepare federal and state tax returns for individuals, partnerships, and S-corporations under supervision.
  • Support Tax Research: Assist with tax research to support compliance and identify potential planning opportunities.
  • Support Client Engagements: Gather and organize financial data and documentation to support client engagements.
  • Manage Assignments: Manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
Client & Team

Collaboration:
  • Communicate Across Teams: Communicate effectively with internal teams to ensure accuracy and timely completion of work.
  • Collaborate Across Service Lines: Collaborate with team members across service lines to support client needs.
  • Apply Feedback: Develop an understanding of tax concepts and begin translating them into practical applications through coaching and review.
Technology & Process Improvement:
  • Use Tax Software: Utilize tax software and technology tools to complete assigned work efficiently.
  • Support Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve processes and enhance workflow efficiency.
Professional Development:
  • Stay Current on Tax Law: Stay current on tax laws, regulations, and industry trends through training and development.
  • Work Toward CPA Licensure: Progress toward CPA eligibility and licensure with firm support, including study time and exam resources.
  • Perform Other Duties as Assigned: Take on additional responsibilities as needed to support the success of the engagement team.
Job Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic understanding of tax preparation for individuals and business entities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Experience with Pro System fx or similar tax software is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Ability to follow all Richey May policies, procedures, standards, specifications, and guidelines.
Experience:
  • 1–2 years of experience in public accounting or relevant internship experience.
  • Internship or academic experience in tax or accounting is preferred.
  • Exposure to industries such as Real Estate, Manufacturing, or Non-Profit is a plus.
  • Interest in working with a variety of clients, including small businesses and individuals.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field required.
  • CPA eligible or actively pursuing a CPA license preferred.

  • Maintains current knowledge of industry practices and ensures best practices are always considered.

Additional Requirements/

Licenses/Certifications:
  • CPA eligible or actively pursuing CPA licensure preferred; not required for entry.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a criminal background check.
