The Behavior Support Technician (BST) is a district-level hourly classified position that will involve supporting students with the most severe behavior challenges in the district. BSTs will work under the immediate direction of special education behavior specialists and general education behavior specialists and report to Special Education administrators as their formal supervisors. BSTs will be required to intervene directly with students with severe behavior challenges, collect, manage, and interpret data on student behavior, draft behavior interventions/plans including environmental engineering, and train school-based para educators to replicate duties after students are maintaining stable behavior.
BSTs will be required to participate in regular professional development and demonstrate competence in learned technical skills. Professional learning will include participation in on‑line behavior management modules, explicit training with specialists and cooperating university personnel, and ongoing embedded training experiences, including regular fidelity probes. Attendance and physical presence are required and is an essential function of this position.
- Implement behavior strategies and/or provide one‑to‑one or small group instruction to students with challenging behaviors (i.e., physical aggression, self‑harm, elopement, destruction of property, other dangerous behavior)
- Deliver direct instruction to students in the special education and general education settings
- Collect data on behavior and/or academic target(s)
- Train and support school‑based para educators in the schools
- Provide emergency support to students in crisis
- Participate in regular professional development and embedded training including MANDT training
- Required to attend regularly scheduled training sessions held by district supervisors (several trainings monthly)
- Must implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational settings
- Must be able to work flexible hours based on student needs
- May be required to ride the school bus to and from school with student(s)
- Must have transportation to travel independently to various schools

Previous work with students with behavior challenges preferred.
Required Knowledge And Skills- Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
- Must be able to learn, describe and apply a variety of learned behavior support and management techniques based on applied behavior analysis (proactive behavior, de‑escalation strategies, physical interventions)
- Must be able to apply acquired knowledge and skills consistently and with fidelity
- Must be able to follow directives from specialists/administrators
- Must demonstrate regular positive interactions with students and school staff under all circumstances
- Must implement and monitor academic and behavior interventions as directed for application in all educational settings
Makes decisions concerning the best way to accomplish assigned tasks. Must take directions well and be able to work within specific guidelines. Makes suggestions but must be willing to follow directions. Concerns for safety of self and others.
