Summary:

  • June – August: ~30 hours/week (Monday – Friday) primarily weekdays with occasional weekend (advanced notice). Staff training during the first full week of June (mandatory). Camp weeks Monday‑Thursday, approx 7:45 am‑4:45 pm. Fridays: one‑hour morning meeting.
  • September – May: up to 20 hours/week (Friday‑Sunday) primarily weekends with occasional Friday afternoons or evenings. Not every weekend is required.
  • Schedules may shift slightly depending on program needs.

Job Summary

At the Natural History Museum of Utah, you’ll work with a supportive team dedicated to inspiring curiosity about science and the natural world.

Whether it’s leading hands‑on activities, engaging young learners, or working behind the scenes, you’ll play a key role in creating unforgettable experiences.

Responsibilities

This is an entry‑level position with responsibilities that shift throughout the year.

  • June–August:
    Support summer camp by helping with set‑up, clean‑up, supply prep, and assisting with activities—including leading part of the program.
  • September–May:
    Assist with other programs such as birthday parties, youth classes, late nights, and museum sleepovers.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure every program is fun, engaging, and packed with high‑quality learning experiences.
  • Set up and facilitate hands‑on science experiments, creative projects, and exciting activities that spark curiosity in young learners.
  • Assist with program logistics, from organizing materials to ensuring seamless transitions between activities.
  • Maintain clean and inspiring spaces for the next adventure.
  • Supervise participants, ensuring safety, engagement, and a positive experience.
  • Provide friendly, helpful customer service.
  • Be flexible and ready to assist with other programming needs as they arise.

Minimum Qualifications

This is an entry‑level position. Training will be provided.

  • Demonstrated interest in child development and guidance.
  • Willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher.
  • Willingness to obtain a food handlers permit, TB test, BCI background check, and first aid training.
  • Demonstrated human‑relation and effective human‑relations skills.
Preferences
  • Experience with Young Explorers – worked with kids in camps, classrooms, museums, or informal learning spaces.
  • Reliable & organized – shows up on time, ready to go, with everything in order.
  • Fantastic communicator – can give directions, answer questions, and lead activities.
  • Energetic & self‑motivated – brings enthusiasm, takes initiative, and dives in.
  • Passionate about STEAM & nature – broad knowledge or strong curiosity to learn.
  • Customer‑service professional – friendly, approachable, ensures a positive experience.
  • Spanish speakers (or proficiency in another language) – highly valued.
