Youth Development, STEM, Summer Camp
Since 2016, the STEM Community Alliance Program (STEMCAP) has provided more than 1,100 educational workshops and hands‑on conservation projects at youth‑in‑custody facilities across northern Utah. STEMCAP offers a variety of programming types including guest lectures led by scientists and artists, multi‑day science workshop series, art enrichment classes, horticulture projects, and field trips. This work occurs across five youth centers, from Provo to Ogden.
STEMCAP partners with experts in Science, the Arts, and the Humanities to increase awareness of and interest in various career and academic pathways for incarcerated youth. STEMCAP enhances educational self‑discovery and provides creative outlets for youth participants. The STEMCAP Program Coordinator will create, lead, and join programming at youth centers. They will support partnerships across and beyond University of Utah campus, develop educational programming, advise material needs, and support data collection.
Responsibilities- Attend, facilitate, and document youth center presentations/events
- Co‑create STEM and/or art programming for justice‑impacted youth
- Correspond with youth center teachers and administrators to ensure schedules, workshop plans, and supply lists are cleared
- Work with presenters to create age‑ and setting‑appropriate hands‑on activities for STEMCAP workshops
- Assist in efforts to recruit presenters
- Assist in organizing and maintaining data, presentations, and other STEMCAP files
- Research and contact local organizations to build connections that benefit youth
- Co‑manage the STEMCAP calendar and develop semester programming schedules
- Facilitate transportation for lecturers to STEMCAP workshops in Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah County
- Work with external evaluators to provide surveys to presenters and teachers
- Attend presenter orientation meetings and provide input and support as presenters craft their workshop for STEMCAP audiences
- Maintain database of all presentation data
- Associate’s degree
- One year of related experience
- Well organized and able to keep track of multiple deadlines and competing priorities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and collaborative working skills
- Demonstrated experience in file and calendar management
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a STEM field, social science, science education, science communication, or related field
- Experience working with justice‑impacted individuals
- Experience leading informal education programming for middle or high school students
- Experience fostering partnerships
