JOB SUMMARY

The School Support Assistant performs a variety of specialized duties to assist school operations in the daily supervision of students, performing a variety of school level and classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process. This position also assists other personnel as needed to ensure an efficient and effective work environment, including performing substitute teaching duties under emergency situations.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Hold or obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six months of hire
  • Ability to perform basic math, including fractions, percentages, and ratios
  • Knowledgeable of age‑appropriate activities, stages of child development, classroom management techniques, developing effective lesson plans, and planning and managing time effectively
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, scanner, fax machines)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Adapt classroom work under the direction of the teacher and para educator to support and reinforce lesson plans
  • Administer tests and evaluations under teacher supervision (e.g., DRA, DIBELS, observational data for IEP goals) and monitor student progress
  • Implement students' learning and behavior plans to meet social, behavioral interventions, health care plans, and IEP compliance
  • Collaborate with teachers to evaluate student progress and implement objectives, providing appropriate classroom intervention such as booster groups, individual instruction, and small group instruction
  • Lead small groups; facilitate play learning; communicate orally and in writing; and adhere to safety practices
  • Monitor individual and groups of students in various settings (classroom, library, playground, lunch, recess, field trips, bus boarding and exiting), providing a safe and positive learning environment and operating physical education equipment and playground activities using standardized methods
  • Work under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information and advice to others; operate within a defined budget
  • Prepare teaching materials and related reports (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) to implement lesson plans and document student progress
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) to maintain student safety and adhere to Education Code, administrative and school policies
  • Perform record‑keeping and clerical functions (scheduling, copying, data recording, answering telephone, responding to security doorbell) to support the teacher and administrator
  • Assist other personnel as required (instructors, site administration, paraprofessionals) ensuring an efficient and effective work environment; schedule activities and meetings; gather, collate, and classify data; identify and create action plans to resolve issues as they arise
  • Disinfect playground areas between student use
  • Utilize resources from other work units to meet goals and objectives
  • Work with frequent interruptions; adapt to changing work priorities; be attentive to detail; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and present information to others
  • Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  • Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to perform the duties of the position effectively
  • Participate in various meetings to receive and convey information
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements effectively and efficiently
