Job Summary
The Student Engagement Assistant will work with the Program Coordinator and Manager within the TRIO
-Student Support Services ( SSS ) Program to facilitate overall success and support activities within the TRIO - SSS Program.
The Student Engagement Assistant will support first-time freshman students in successfully navigating the University of Utah and building a strong sense of belonging within the SSS community. Through regular outreach and one-on-one check-ins, they provide guidance, encouragement, and referrals to campus resources while fostering meaningful connections and student success.
The Student Engagement Assistant will also help develop and facilitate workshops, coordinate community-building activities, and organize social events that promote student engagement throughout the academic year. The position also serves as an ambassador for the program by representing TRIO SSS at outreach events, tabling opportunities, orientations, and campus resource fairs to recruit and connect with prospective and current students.
Additional responsibilities include creating and managing student-facing communications, such as social media content, newsletters, the TRIO Canvas page, promotional graphics, and event marketing materials, to increase awareness of TRIO SSS programs and services. The Student Engagement Assistant also provide administrative support, assists with program operations, and contributes to the planning and implementation of initiatives that foster an engaging and supportive student experience.
Program Overview:
The University of Utah’s TRIO Student Support Services ( SSS ) program is a federally funded academic success program dedicated to helping first-generation students, students from income-eligible backgrounds, and students with disabilities successfully navigate the University and complete their first bachelor’s degree. Through individualized advising, tutoring, academic and career exploration, financial aid and financial literacy guidance, graduate school preparation, workshops, peer connections, and community-building experiences, SSS provides students with the resources, relationships, and encouragement needed to thrive.
The program foster a welcoming and student-centered learning community where participants can strengthen their sense of belonging, develop confidence and self-advocacy, overcome barriers to persistence, and achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Education, the program receives $409,067 annually to serve 225 eligible University of Utah students each year.
Responsibilities
- Maintain regular contact with assigned students through outreach, check-ins, and follow-up to support their transition, engagement, and participation in TRIO SSS and the University of Utah.
- Build supportive mentoring relationships by providing encouragement, sharing personal experiences, and referring students to appropriate campus resources and services.
- Assist in the planning, development, facilitation, and evaluation of workshops and educational programming during the fall and spring semesters.
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate community-building activities, social events, and engagement opportunities that foster student connection and belonging.
