Key Responsibilities

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) invites you to consider an enjoyable and gratifying employment opportunity with our agency. We are looking for four caring and motivated individuals to fill the position of Paraprofessional for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing working at the Jean Massieu School for the Deaf in Salt Lake.

The Paraprofessional assists a classroom instructor in working with deaf/hard of hearing students, who may have additional disabilities.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Paraprofessional you will:

  • prepare teaching materials and tutor individual students under the supervision of the instructor
  • communicate the progress of the students to the instructor
  • perform such duties as may relate to the motivation and achievement of students in academic and skills areas
  • assist with behavior interventions under the direction of the instructor
  • assist with routine daily activities, i.e. bus duty, recess, lunch, bathroom (may include diapering), etc.
  • provide support in a classroom environment by working directly with teachers and students.
  • maintain accurate records and logs.
  • design and/or prepare training/instructional materials, teaching aids and devices.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) skills required for assignments in the ASL classrooms
  • Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors.
  • Practical skills in working effectively with students.
  • Safe and timely response to special classroom situations.
  • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
  • Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to drive a state vehicle is required.
Supplemental Information
  • There are risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g., being subject to possible physical attack. (Risks are related to the possibility of working with students who are non‑compliant, self‑abusive, and/or aggressive.)
  • These positions have strenuous physical requirements such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities and recurring lifting of students (some with limited mobility) and/or their personal needs equipment. Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with previous experience working with disabled children, MANDT training, and a valid Utah Driver License.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check is required.
  • These are part‑time positions for 9 months, 181 days each school year.

    Work Schedule:

    Monday through Friday, 30 hours per week.
