Salt Lake Community College aims to set an example for education that embraces and uplifts all students. As such, we are looking to employ a dynamic individual skilled in understanding and effectively teaching students from a wide variety of cultural and academic backgrounds, and who excels in the art of teaching, exploring, applying, and synthesizing knowledge. The successful candidate will join a vital and innovative department as its members are reflective practitioners and knowledgeable teachers in their respective fields.

Learning Assistants actively serve students in obtaining the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in their courses. In particular, the Biology Department is searching for an individual capable of assisting instructors in delivering a welcoming, captivating, and intellectually challenging learning experience to our pre-major biology and pre-health science students.

Under lecture faculty and/or lab instructor supervision, Learning Assistants will aide students with classroom or laboratory activities, provide peer-tutoring on topics, assist the instructor in course preparation, provide general maintenance/organization of classroom and Canvas spaces, and/or grade formative assessments. Learning Assistants will collaborate with course instructors to determine specific tasks for the course. Hours typically range from 2-20 hours per week, depending on curricular needs as determined by the course instructor.

Completion in the college biology (BIOL) course in which they will assist with a B or above grade.

Received or eligibility to receive a Federal Work Study Award for Academic Year .

Minimum 2.0 GPA

Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours for both Fall and Spring semesters.

General knowledge of basic biology. Knowledge of the content that pertains directly to the course they will be an aide for. Effectively interact and communicate with a wide range of community college students, faculty, and staff, to foster positive relationships throughout the college. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.

Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Prior experience working or volunteering in a lab environment or tutoring.
