The Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Utah invites applications for a career-line faculty position focused on undergraduate teaching and student success. This is a 12-month,teaching-focused appointment with an anticipated salary range of $80,000–$90,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience,and subject to University approval. The anticipated start date is12/1/2026.

Position

Summary

The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting the undergraduate Mining Engineering program and the department'sABET-accredited degree. The position is intended for an experiencedteacher and mining professional who is comfortable teaching a widerange of undergraduate mining engineering courses and who canconnect classroom learning with practical miningapplications.

The appointment will carry a heavy teaching responsibility. The successful candidate will teach core and elective undergraduatecourses, contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement, support ABET assessment and documentation, advise andmentor undergraduate students, and help strengthen the studentexperience through applied projects, field-oriented learning,industry case studies, and professional preparation.

This position is especially well suited for a candidate who hasmeaningful teaching experience, substantial industry experience, orboth. A Ph.D. is preferred, but it is not required if the candidate's teaching record, professional mining experience, and technical background demonstrate the ability to deliver high-quality undergraduate mining engineering instruction.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate mining engineering courses across the curriculum, with possible areas including but not limited tointroduction to mining, mine design, mine planning, surface and underground mining methods, mine ventilation, mine safety, minesystems, geospatial and surveying applications, mine operations,equipment, engineering economics, capstone design, and technicalelectives.
  • Support the ABET-accredited undergraduate program through assessment, continuous improvement, course documentation, and engagement with student outcomes.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality course materials that integrateengineering fundamentals, practical mining applications, moderndigital tools, industry case studies, and systems thinking.
  • Mentor and advise undergraduate students, including support forcapstone projects, internships, professional development, studentdesign competitions, and career preparation.
  • Work collaboratively with tenure-line and career-line faculty to maintain a coherent undergraduate curriculum and strengthen the student value proposition.
