Law Career Counselor
The S.J. Quinney College of Law is a top-ranked public law school with a national reputation for academic excellence, student success, and strong employment and bar-passage outcomes. The College of Law seeks a motivated and student-centered Career Coachto help JD students identify and pursue meaningful employment opportunities and successfully transition into the legalprofession.
Working within the Career Development Office (CDO), the Career Coach will provide individualized career advising, job-searchsupport, and professional development programming tailored to thelegal employment market. The position will advise students acrossall three years of law school, with particular responsibility for helping graduating students and recent graduates securepost-graduate employment.
The Career Coach will help students evaluate legal and law-related career paths, develop effective application materials, prepare for interviews, build professional networks, and navigate the recruitment practices and timelines associated with different legalsectors. The position will also work closely with colleagues,faculty, alumni, and employers to identify opportunities and improve student employment outcomes.
The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of lawschool and a practical understanding of the legal profession andlegal employment market. The ideal candidate will be an effectiveadvisor and communicator who can build trust with students, providecandid and constructive guidance, and work proactively with students at different stages of career readiness.
ResponsibilitiesMaintain an assigned studentcaseload and provide individualized advising on career goals,practice-area interests, employment options, and job-search strategy.
Help students develop and carry out individualized employment plans, including appropriate timelines,target employers, networking strategies, and follow-up activities.
Review and provide substantive feedback on legal resumes, cover letters, writing samples, professional biographies, and other employment materials.
Conduct mock interviews and prepare students for screening interviews, callback interviews, judicialinterviews, and other legal hiring processes.
Advise students on employment pathway sin private practice, government, public interest organizations,judicial clerkships, business, compliance, and other JD-advantagesettings.
Help students navigateon-campus interviewing, employer recruitment programs, job fairs,direct applications, networking-based searches, and other hiring processes.
Assist students in identifyingsummer employment, internships, judicial externships, public interest opportunities, and other experiences that strengthen theirqualifications for post-graduate employment.
Provide intensiveoutreach and job-search assistance to graduating students and recent graduates who are seeking employment, including support during the period following graduation and the barexamination.
Develop and deliver workshops, panels, andother programs addressing legal employment markets, recruitment timelines, networking, interviewing, professional identity, andcareer readiness.
Build and maintain relationships with legal employers, alumni, faculty, and other professional contacts to identify employment opportunities,strengthen referral networks, and connect students with relevantpractitioners.
Contribute to the College'semployment-outcomes strategy by monitoring student progress,identifying students who need additional support, and recommendingtargeted interventions.
Maintain timely and accurate advisingrecords in 12
Twenty or other Career Development Office systems andassist with the collection, verification, and reporting of graduateemployment data required by the ABA, NALP, and the University.
Collaborate with Career Development Office colleagues, faculty, student organizations, and other
University partners to expand student participation in career services and support institutional employment goals.
