Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Lead(Level IV) or Principal(Level V) Mechanical Engineer

Carterra is a fast-growing life science bio-technology company located in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Carterra name is based on two core concepts;
Cartography (mapping) and terra (worlds), literally meaning  mapping worlds . This represents the Company's exciting new high-speed, high-resolution label-free biosensor technology, which is being used by leading pharmaceutical and bio-technology companies to thoroughly explore new worlds in biotherapeutic drug discovery that were previously impossible to investigate. Our products allow researchers to identify potential targets early in the drug discovery process where risks and costs can be significantly mitigated.

The Opportunity

Carterra is hiring an experienced Mechanical Engineer to help lead the development of complex instrumentation used for measuring biomolecular interactions — including automated fluid / sample handling mechanisms, sample preparation and delivery systems, fluidic controls, motion controls, opt-mechanics, and thermal control systems.

This posting covers two levels — Engineer IV / Lead and Engineer V / Principal — and we are open to candidates who fit either profile. Where a selected candidate lands will depend on their years of experience and demonstrated scope of technical leadership, assessed during the interview process.

This is an in-office position located in Salt Lake City.

Engineer IV / Lead (10–15 years of experience)

Sets the technical direction for a product or subsystem, leads a development program end-to-end, reviews the work of other engineers, and mentors Engineer I–III team members.

Engineer V / Principal (15+ years of experience)

Defines technical strategy across multiple products or programs, sets engineering standards for the mechanical engineering team, represents engineering to cross-functional and executive stakeholders, and mentors engineers at every level, including Leads.

Essential Job Functions
  • Lead or help define technical strategy across the development process — concept, design, test, and iterate — for one program (Lead) or multiple products/programs (Principal), ensuring compliance with requirements and engineering specifications
  • Set technical direction for a product or subsystem (Lead) or across product lines (Principal), and review the work of other engineers against requirements and specifications
  • Maintain rigorous documentation of engineering findings and decisions, and ensure the broader team does the same
  • Communicate and represent engineering findings during meetings and design reviews, including with cross-functional and executive stakeholders
  • Drive, or provide senior oversight of, new product development activities including CAD design, testing, troubleshooting, and documentation
  • Own or oversee test strategy and work with test groups to ensure product requirements and engineering specifications are met
  • Partner with manufacturing and quality teams (and leadership, at the Principal level) to plan and execute tech transfer to manufacturing
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers — Lead-level hires mentor Engineer I–III team members;
    Principal-level hires mentor engineers at all levels, including Leads
  • Set and uphold engineering standards, best practices, and design principles across the mechanical engineering team, and help evaluate and protect intellectual property arising from engineering work (Principal level)
  • Perform other duties as assigned that are consistent with the responsibilities and level of the position
Qualifications
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Proven ability to lead a team of interdisciplinary engineers and drive alignment across functions; at the Principal level, ability to set technical direction across the broader engineering organization
  • Deep understanding of, and ability to master, entire system designs and their interfaces;
    Principal-level candidates bring this mastery across multiple products or platforms
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve the most complex mechanical system instrumentation issues independently, and guide others through them
  • Expert proficiency in Solidworks 2024 or later
  • Ability to foster positive, collaborative working relationships across teams…
