Job Description
The Core Tax Services (CTS) Manager – ASC
740 advises clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, selects alternative actions to reduce tax burden and compliance costs, and identifies compliant methods while serving as the primary contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 issues.
The role requires applying deep tax knowledge to understand potential issues, communicating risks, and anticipating policy changes.
Job Duties- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients and the firm comply with all relevant authorities, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
- Conduct top‑level reviews of tax return components and resolve all issues.
- Communicate findings from tax accrual reviews with Assurance clients.
- Plan and review the tax process, budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement progress, billing, and collection of accounts receivable.
- Manage client relationships and expectations, providing timely advice.
- Research
- Identify research needs and frame issues concisely, preparing clear analyses.
- Develop research methodologies for complex issues.
- Train managers and staff in research skills and ASC 740 framing.
- Engage firm specialists when appropriate.
- ASC 740 (FAS 109/FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Apply BDO policy, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740 proactively.
- Explain income‑tax provision components and uncertain tax positions to clients.
- Coordinate with Assurance on budget, scope, and delivery dates for accrual reviews.
- Review tax provisions and work papers, utilizing Specialized Tax Services as needed.
- Tax Consulting
- Recommend and implement methods to maximize client benefits and reduce current and future taxes.
- Consider CTS and STS consulting specialties per client.
- Develop and execute work plans incorporating STS assistance.
- Act as a technical resource, ensure compliance with written tax advice policy, provide exam support, and delegate projects effectively.
- Tax Specialization
- Develop in‑depth knowledge in one or more tax areas (e.g., corporate, state, international, R&D).
- Organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions and mentor associates on ASC 740 as required.
- Strategy Development
- Identify and develop new or improved client strategies, including marketing initiatives when relevant.
- Present complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Collaborate with National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality ASC 740 analyses.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise and review work of Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
- Provide performance feedback and career development guidance.
- Train associates on software tools and coaching for effective delegation.
- Manage and schedule workload for associates and senior associates.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation required; master’s degree preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Taxation.
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).
- Five (5) or more years of prior experience.
- Experience managing ASC 740 preparation and audit for privately held and publicly traded clients.
- Supervisory experience required.
- Multinational client experience preferred.
- CPA, Attorney (U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (or equivalent) required.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Experience with tax research databases (BNA, RIA) and compliance software (Go File Room , GoSystem
RS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation, etc.).
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective delegation and decision‑making skills.
- Strong analytical, research, and critical‑thinking abilities.
- Team‑player with leadership potential.
- Ability to compose tax advice and maintain client relationships.
- Executive presence for client presentations.
