The Opportunity

Most FP&A Analyst roles are maintenance jobs. Someone else built the model, someone else decided what to measure, and the analyst keeps the file current.

This is not that job.

Laurel is building its finance function from scratch. The models, the reporting cadence, the KPI definitions, the dashboards, the data pipelines behind them: most of it does not exist yet. The FP&A Analyst will be in the room while it gets designed and will do a large share of the building.

The Enduring Mandate

Make the numbers trustworthy, make them fast, and make them tell leadership what to do next.

About Laurel Innovations

Laurel Innovations is an AI-powered race timing, tracking, and storytelling platform that powers more than 500 endurance events annually, including premier races such as Bay to Breakers, the Surf City Marathon, the Boston 10K for Women, the Houston Half Marathon, and Run the Wharf.

Serving hundreds of thousands of athletes each year, Laurel delivers accurate race timing, real-time athlete tracking, AI-powered race storytelling, live spectator experiences, and advanced race operations.

Laurel's combined hardware and software platform is transforming how large-scale events track participants by replacing legacy RFID timing technology with patent-pending micro-checkpoints deployed throughout the course. This enables true real-time athlete tracking, richer race data, enhanced safety insights, and unprecedented operational visibility for race directors while creating more engaging experiences for athletes, spectators, broadcasters, and brand partners.

Laurel was born out of an endurance event production company co-founded by an MIT engineering PhD. After developing the technology internally and proving it across hundreds of events, the founders separated the technology business, sold the event production division, and reinvested the proceeds into Laurel to focus exclusively on scaling the platform.

With a proven technology platform, an established sales and engineering team, and rapidly growing revenue, Laurel is focused on expanding its market leadership, achieving profitability, and building toward a successful exit.

The Role

The FP&A Analyst reports to the Head of Finance and works directly with the founders and functional leaders across sales, operations, and engineering.

This is a hands-on, build-it-yourself role at a company where the finance function is still being assembled. The successful candidate will own the recurring analytical work that leadership depends on, and will be trusted with increasing scope as they prove they can be relied on without supervision.

The person in this seat must be equally comfortable:

  • Building a driver-based revenue model from a blank sheet
  • Explaining to a founder why gross margin moved 300 basis points last month
  • Designing a dashboard that a non-finance leader will actually open
  • Chasing down a $4,000 variance until they know exactly what caused it

No task is beneath this role. The analyst who is willing to open the raw data and reconcile it line by line is the analyst who earns the right to make recommendations.

Key Responsibilities Modeling & Analysis
  • Build and maintain the operating model connecting revenue, events, headcount, hardware deployment, expenses, and cash flow.
  • Model unit economics at the event and customer level: revenue per event, cost to serve, contribution margin, payback on deployed hardware.
  • Run scenario and sensitivity analysis to support pricing, contracting, and investment decisions.
  • Support the Head of Finance on capital planning, runway analysis, and fundraise or transaction preparation.
Forecasting & Planning
  • Own the mechanics of the rolling forecast: update it, reconcile it to actuals, and explain what changed and why.
  • Support the annual budget process and coordinate inputs from department leaders.
  • Track forecast accuracy over time and improve the assumptions that keep missing.
  • Build the event-level revenue pipeline forecast in coordination with sales.
Reporting & Business Performance
  • Produce the monthly reporting package: financial statements, KPI scorecard, variance analysis, and commentary.
  • Build and…
