Job SummaryThis position provides bedded outpatient Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment to patients in the HMHI Adult Receiving Center. The role will prescribe medications and provide short‑term treatment for SUD/mental health disorders within the scope of practice and in accordance with State Law. The Adult Receiving Center at Huntman Mental Health Institute helps individuals get help during a mental health crisis 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Patients are supported by a skilled team of mental‑health care professionals who help patients receive care and create a connection to community resources. Interventions are short, highly intensive, and focused on resolving mental‑health crises in the least restrictive manner possible, leading to better outcomes and lower emergency‑room costs.
- Crisis evaluation focused on understanding individual needs.
- Psychiatric assessment of a person’s mental health condition.
- Medication prescribing, if needed, for stabilizing symptoms.
- Solution‑focused therapy, peer support, and case management.
- Recommendations for next steps and connection to ongoing support.
- Observation, if needed, for up to 23 hours.
- Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
- Performs physical examinations.
- Orders laboratory tests, x‑rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
- Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
- Reaches tentative diagnoses of medical, surgical and other conditions.
- Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians to provide optimal medical management.
- Participates in continuing medical education, including specialty and sub‑specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
- Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
- Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
- Participates in special projects and committee functions.
- Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within 30 days of hire.
- Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by the department or by privileging criteria.
