This position provides bedded outpatient Substance Abuse and Mental Health Treatment to patients in the HMHI Adult Receiving Center. The role will prescribe medications and provide short‑term treatment for SUD/mental health disorders within the scope of practice and in accordance with State Law. The Adult Receiving Center at Huntman Mental Health Institute helps individuals get help during a mental health crisis 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Patients are supported by a skilled team of mental‑health care professionals who help patients receive care and create a connection to community resources. Interventions are short, highly intensive, and focused on resolving mental‑health crises in the least restrictive manner possible, leading to better outcomes and lower emergency‑room costs.

• Crisis evaluation focused on understanding individual needs.
• Psychiatric assessment of a person’s mental health condition.
• Medication prescribing, if needed, for stabilizing symptoms.
• Solution‑focused therapy, peer support, and case management.
• Recommendations for next steps and connection to ongoing support.
• Observation, if needed, for up to 23 hours.

• Takes complex medical histories on patients referred for consultation by academic and community physicians.
• Performs physical examinations.
• Orders laboratory tests, x‑rays, special imaging studies and other diagnostic procedures.
• Orders and supervises the administration of blood products.
• Reaches tentative diagnoses of medical, surgical and other conditions.
• Develops treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians to provide optimal medical management.
• Participates in continuing medical education, including specialty and sub‑specialty meetings, clubs, boards and conferences.
• Assists in the collection of data for research projects.
• Orders consultations and interacts with members of other specialty medical teams.
• Participates in special projects and committee functions.

• Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
• Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within 30 days of hire.

• Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by the department or by privileging criteria.
