Performs technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles.
Responsibilities Experiments- Conduct experiments by applying established methods and procedures.
- Set up and assist with research protocols and experiments under the general guidance of the principal investigator and other senior investigators; may have primary responsibility for independently setting up, performing, and troubleshooting less complex experiments.
- Observe experimental results in progress and maintain written records of activities and observations; apply past experience and precedents to identify and troubleshoot problems.
- Anticipate unexpected findings and assist in troubleshooting techniques.
- Reconcile results that are disparate from anticipated findings; re‑run techniques as necessary.
- Report experimental results to the principal investigator and other senior laboratory personnel and assist in their analysis.
- Collaborate with the Principal Investigator in investigating and developing modifications to techniques and document all new techniques developed in the laboratory.
- Adhere to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
- Collect and analyze data resulting from experimentation/testing.
- Summarize results and prepare progress reports for oral presentation at laboratory meetings.
- Prepare appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, statistical summaries, etc.
- Contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts by drafting portions of the text, preparing graphs, tables, and charts, etc.
- Conduct literature searches to assist in establishing new laboratory techniques.
- Accomplish day‑to‑day care and housekeeping of laboratory.
- Assess the need for and order all supplies and reagents needed for experiments.
- Assist in the maintenance of laboratory equipment and safety records, and in the preparation of routine reagents.
- Monitor laboratory equipment and instrument performance; obtain maintenance and repair as necessary.
- Maintain computerized records associated with laboratory activities.
- Instruct others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provide technical guidance and direction as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Equivalency Statement: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor’s degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
- Research Technician, I: Requires little to no related experience.
- Research Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
- Research Technician, III: Requires 3+ years of related experience.
- Research Technician, IV: Requires 5+ years of related experience.
