Job Description

Salt Lake City - Public Utilities Department is looking for a skilled individual to join our team. Incumbents read water meters and make accurate recordings of those readings using a hand‑held reading device. They maintain meter box rings and covers for the surrounding area on a prescribed route. Selected individuals report to the Water Meter Reader Supervisor.

Position Salary Range
  • Water Meter Reader I: $18.64 - $24.52
  • Water Meter Reader II: $19.77 - $26

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain from supervisor a computerized hand‑held unit containing route assignment for the current day.
  • Drive the city vehicle to a strategic location on the route, then set out on foot or in the vehicle to read meters listed in the handheld device.
  • Report by radio to dispatch unsafe conditions, such as loose lids in parking strips or on streets.
  • Locate the meter, check address, meter location, meter type and number against information in the handheld device, and enter data on corrections or hazards as needed.
  • Use a meter key to loosen and lift the box lid, flip back the dust cover, and read the consumption number displayed on the register. Enter the data in the device and verify it when required. Reseat the dust cover and meter lid and tighten securely.
  • Observe the condition of the meter, box, and connections; enter data about any service, maintenance or replacement needed.
  • Enter data regarding illegal connections or problems for follow‑up to print on reports generated by the supervisor.
  • Ensure printed reports accurately reflect high or low readings for the supervisor or department and investigate any abnormal consumption. Suggest improvements or changes in routes to increase efficiency.
  • Return handheld meter reading devices to the department daily; download device readings into the computer if needed.
  • Answer questions from residents, shop, and business owners about meters and consumption.
  • Back‑track along the route to read meters missed earlier, including those that are difficult to find, flooded, or blocked. Bail meter boxes as necessary.
  • Replace broken rings and lids, clean registers, install grade rings, and trim grass and weeds around the lids. Perform minor maintenance such as tightening connections and digging out meter boxes.
  • During the winter season, assist in water emergency situations, plant, and water system maintenance.
  • Maintain the vehicle in a clean and safe condition, including scheduling routine maintenance.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.
  • Ability to locate water meters using property descriptions or maps, read water meters, and make simple calculations when necessary.
  • Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions and to read meters according to schedule.
  • Ability to relate well with the general public, co‑workers, and supervisors.
  • Six (6) months of meter reading experience (for Water Meter Reader II).
  • Familiarity with and ability to read commercial meter routes (for Water Meter Reader II).
Working Conditions
  • Moderately heavy physical activity. May push, pull, or lift medium‑heavy weights.
  • Moderate exposure to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, barking dogs and other noise.
  • Intermittent exposure to stress due to human behavior.
  • Potential for heights, both above and below ground.
Career Ladder

After six months of successful performance as a Water Meter Reader I, an incumbent may be advanced to Water Meter Reader II based upon the supervisor/manager recommendation, review by Human Resources, and Department Director approval.
