Position Title
Water Meter Reader II (may underfill)
Job SummarySalt Lake City – Public Utilities Department is looking for a skilled individual to read water meters and accurately record those readings using a hand‑held reading device. The incumbent maintains meter box rings and covers along a prescribed route and reports to the Water Meter Reader Supervisor.
Position Salary RangeWater Meter Reader II: $19.77 - $26

Key Responsibilities- Obtain from supervisor a computerized hand‑held unit containing route assignment for the current day. May be required to read routes using computer printouts in case of upload or download failure to the handheld meter reading units.
- Drive city vehicle to strategic location on route, then set out on foot or in vehicle to read meters listed in handheld.
- Locate meter, check address, meter location, meter type and number against information in the handheld device. Enter data on corrections or hazards as needed. Contact property owner when necessary for access.
- Use meter key to loosen and lift box lid and flip back dust cover over meter register. Read consumption number displayed on the register and enter data in device and verify data when required. Reseat dust cover and meter lid, tighten securely, and note any issues. Close gates or doors upon exit.
- Observe condition of meter, box, and connections. Make data entry for any service, maintenance or replacement needed.
- Enter data regarding illegal connections or problems for follow‑up to print on reports generated by supervisor.
- Enter data accurately to ensure printed reports reflect high or low readings for supervisor or department. Investigate abnormal consumption when assigned. Suggest improvements or changes in routes to increase efficiency.
- Return handheld meter reading devices to department daily. May download handheld device readings into computer.
- Answer questions from residents, shop and business owners about meters and water bills. Offer suggestions on minor problems.
- Backtrack into route to read meters missed earlier, including meters that were hard to find, flooded or blocked. Advise owners of possible side leaks. Bail meter boxes as necessary to complete reads.
- Replace broken rings and lids, clean registers, install grade rings, and trim grass and weeds around lids. May perform other minor maintenance such as tightening connections and digging out meter boxes. During winter season, assist in water emergency situations, plant, and water system maintenance. Maintain vehicle in a clean and safe condition, scheduling routine maintenance.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Six (6) months of meter reading experience.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license or driving privilege card.
- Ability to locate water meters using property descriptions or maps, read water meters and make simple calculations when necessary. Familiarity with and ability to read commercial meter routes.
- Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions and to read meters according to schedule.
- Ability to relate well with the public, co‑workers, and supervisors.
- Moderately heavy physical activity; may push, pull or lift medium‑heavy weights.
- Difficult working conditions erate exposure to disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, barking dogs, noise, dirt and grease, automobile traffic, brush and thistles, and heights both above and below ground.
- Intermittent exposure to stress because of human behavior.
After six months of successful performance as a Water Meter Reader I, the incumbent may be advanced to Water Meter Reader II based upon the supervisor/manager recommendation, review by Human Resources, and Department Director approval.
