The Executive Director of Gift Planning is a senior leader in the Intermountain Foundation, responsible for building and overseeing a system‑wide planned giving platform, developing strategies, managing a portfolio of high‑wealth prospects, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to secure complex planned gifts.

Scope

This system‑level position interacts with all Foundation functions and external partners in legal, banking, and investment industries. The role is based in the Intermountain Health footprint, with a preference for the greater Salt Lake area, and requires frequent travel across the system.

Job Essentials
  • Develop a strategic plan for the office of gift planning that sets aggressive short‑ and long‑range goals and metrics to meet system funding objectives, integrating with the broader Foundation strategic plan.
  • Develop and lead a comprehensive planned giving program, including strategy design and donor engagement processes for individuals, families, and foundations at a system level.
  • Create system‑wide planned giving printed materials, other media, and web‑based programming.
  • Oversee, approve, and advance planned gift proposals and agreements.
  • Carry a personal portfolio of planned gift donor prospects.
  • Develop guidelines, materials, proposals, presentations, and related content for local philanthropy officers to identify, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward prospects.
  • Manage system‑level processes to track the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of planned gifts from individuals, physicians, employees, foundations, and corporations.
  • Track and move forward maturing planned gifts (estates, trusts, etc.) to close donations efficiently, ensuring appropriate valuation, recording, and acknowledgement.
  • Collaborate with accounting, finance, legal, and real estate departments for valuation, acceptance, and monitoring of complex planned gift arrangements, maintaining audit‑compliant records.
  • Conduct system‑level cultivation, donor engagement, recognition, and communication programs for planned gift donors and prospects, including expanding a planned giving society.
  • Recommend strategies for recognition and recording of planned gifts.
  • Serve as a public speaker on behalf of local Foundation offices and Intermountain Health as requested.
  • Actively engage in the community.
  • Pursue continued professional development through education activities and conferences to enhance fundraising skills and stay abreast of industry trends and legislative developments.
  • Serve as a subject‑matter expert and resource on healthcare philanthropy issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Education verified.
  • Seven years as a fundraising professional, including leadership experience and demonstrated achievement in systematic major‑gift fundraising with program/staff management.
  • Three years of demonstrated accomplishment in complex planned‑giving philanthropy programming and gift stewardship, including estates, trusts, tangible personal property, real estate, and appreciated asset gift vehicles.
  • Knowledge of current tax laws and contemporary planned‑giving vehicles, and ability to teach and train other development professionals in planned‑giving basics.
  • Effective, motivating interpersonal skills for relationship building and communication in person, over the phone, and via email with diverse groups (volunteers, civic/business leaders, board members, patients, families, hospital staff, foundations, corporations).
  • Success in organizing and utilizing volunteer leadership (committees) in planned‑giving fundraising practices.
