Physician Assistant

Patient care in the Division of Transplantation and Advanced Hepatobiliary Surgery at the University of Utah Hospital. The Transplant APC (Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner) role provides care to kidney, pancreas, and liver transplant recipients, as well as hepatobiliary and general surgery patients. Responsibilities are inpatient and include primarily postoperative care of transplant and hepatobiliary patients. Prior experience with transplant/surgery is preferred but not required.

• 14 shifts a month (12‑hour shifts), including nights, holidays, and weekends.
• Patient population includes kidney, pancreas, and liver transplant recipients; kidney donors; hepatobiliary patients; general surgery procedures on pre‑ and post‑transplant patients; inpatient liver transplant evaluations.
• Perform physical examinations and take complex medical histories on high‑acuity patients.
• Order and review laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures.
• Review patients’ progress and manage patient care accordingly.
• Maintain all required documentation for patient care.
• Develop treatment plans in conjunction with attending physicians to provide optimal patient medical and surgical management.
• Facilitate inpatient multidisciplinary rounds daily on post‑operative patients.
• Participate in continuing medical education, specialty and sub‑specialty meetings, boards, and conferences.
• Order consultations and interact with members of other specialty medical teams.
• Participate in and present Morbidity and Mortality presentations.
• Participate in kidney and liver transplant selection committees.
• Participate in monthly APC education meetings.
• Participate in other meetings and trainings as outlined by leadership team.
• Perform procedures: line/drain removal, wound care, suturing.
• Assist in the operating room as needed for kidney, pancreas, liver transplants and other surgeries such as laparoscopic/robotic hernia repairs, liver resections, PD catheter insertions/removals, donor nephrectomies, native nephrectomies.
• Assist in the collection of data for research as necessary.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned unit, including principles of lifespan growth and development and ability to assess data regarding patient’s status.

• Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
• Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).

• Certification in ACLS, BLS, NRP, ATLS may be required by department or privileging criteria.
